My daughter signed up for housing @ UCSD today and said that there wasn’t a space to indicate preference (single,double, etc). Do you have to pay first to do that? Or did she miss something?
How do you sign up for housing? Do you have to do SIR first?
@miahun we were informed to go to the housing tab and sign up for housing. you do not need to SIR.
@onlyrodeo thank you.
@onlyrodeo you’re good for now! That part of the housing application comes well after SIRing.
Everyone else y’all should sign up for housing whether SIRing or not
what is SIR? (newbie to this, clearly…)
@washugrad statement of intent. Basically when you commit to that school and enroll there. SIR deadline is May 1.
Thanks @groverrohan
onlyrodeo- in recent past, there has been a housing shortage on campus, and most freshman end up in a triple. Even though the rooms were really only designed for 2, they manage to squeeze 3 in. There are usually a set of bunk beds with 2 dressers and 2 desks, and a loft bed with a wardrobe and desk under it. Beds are assigned to each roommate so there is fighting for the "best"set-up. I don’t think freshman ever get singles unless there is some special circumstance, and it would be rare to get a double. The plus side is that the cost is slightly less for a triiple so you will save some money. I have a son and he was just fine with it, but I would imagine it might be a bit crowded for 3 girls. It is very doable and there are a lot more kids on each floor so more opportunity to make friends.
Thanks @takeitallin. I don’t think D wants a single but she does not want to be stuck in a mini double. Maybe overcrowding will be a blessing…she will appreciate the space at home and want to come back more often
Lol- D1 is a minamalist and would have been just fine but D2 would have been extremely space challenged! 3 people in those rooms is tight but my S didn’t think it was a problem at all.
Your D will fill out a questionnaire later which will serve to match roommates and ask her preferences for room size. We joke that the questionnaire is useless as they all respond that they are neat, respectful of others, easy to get along with, etc…in other words, they will ALL make perfect roommates. I guess something about the system works because my son ended up with great roommates and great floormates and had an amazing freshman experience. Congratulations to your D!
I thought I saw something that if you sign up for housing, and then cancel, there is a fee? Maybe that was UCSB?
^ I don’t think there’s any penalty for UCSD.
There isn’t a penalty. You’re signing up for housing, which isn’t the same as signing your housing contract. Sign your housing contract when you SIR; you will be charged a $650 housing deposit which will be credited to your fall quarter fees. Sometime during the summer, HDH opens another form allowing students to indicate room and roommate preference.
If you haven’t signed up for housing yet, do it! Whether or not you end up attending UCSD, this will maximize your chances of getting the living situation you want.
Housing is assigned on first-come, first-serve basis. Freshman are guaranteed housing but those who sign up late may end up in overflow housing.
The only question is 'have you even been convicted of a felony?" is that correct? Does a Yes answer preclude you from housing?
