Well, you're not going to be in one of the social houses, but since I might very well be living in Ladd next year, I'm going to say that Winthrop/Ladd are the best. I lived in Moore and that tends to be a pretty cool dorm. TravisD, an occasional poster on this site, lives in Mac, so he might be able to shed more light on the social house scene.

Thanks, oliver. But could you attempt something like this?

example:

Quinby: Known for its nerds, but nonetheless is the nicest dorm, central location, etc

There aren't really different stereotypes associated with each first-year dorm. The only one is the chem-free dorm, which happens to be East this year. Since they don't go out to the parties that much, people don't see them out much and tend to think they are introverted, non-partiers...

They're all randomized, so it's hard to tell, besides the chem free dorms.

Winthrop and Maine are both the closest to classes.

East and West aren't really as close to classes, but they're close to the tower and more of the upperclass housing.

Moore, Hyde, and Appleton are closest to Moulton Union. (I guess Coleman too).

This year, Mac tried being the 'quirky but cool' house, doing some artsy things but still throwing the traditional keggers and such. Who knows what it will be like next year. You're living in Ladd, Oliver? That's awesome. Who else is, other than Max Palmer? I heard Lauren Duerksen is proctoring. Should be a good year.

My block is Max P, Brandon M, me, and Beth F.

I think we'll get in, but not sure yet

You might want to throw Appleton and Hyde in there because they will both be open as freshman housing next year. Hyde will be chem free, East won't.
Essentially, all of the freshman dorms are the same, with the obvious exception of the chem-free dorm which has its own unique social atmosphere..and that's all I'll say about that. Quinby, Mac, Helmreich, Ladd, Baxter, and Howell are all social houses--Howell is chem free tho. The social house that I'm affiliated with is Helmreich and we all initally thought it was kinda sketchy (and I guess maybe it is) but it's not bad. The rest of them, to someone who isn't there very much (only for parties, really) seem pretty much the same. Obviously, if I had to classify them, they'd be different but that all depends on who lives in them and that'll change by next year anyways. The social houses are typically mostly sophomores and some juniors.
East and West are nice because they're new, but they're far away (relatively speaking). Maine and Winthrop are close to everything, but if you live there Fall 06, you'll have to move to Coleman or Moore for the spring semester which is potentially really annoying. Oh, and this year Maine and Winthrop have single-sex floors--don't know if that will change. Appelton and Hyde will be 3 room quads so get ready to get along with 3 roommates, not just two.
