housing survey

for the freshman housing survey, the choices are
large 140+
small 140-
sharpe scholars housing
monroe scholars housing

if you aren't a Monroe Scholar, can you still pick Monroe Scholars housing? any suggestions? I'm rather disappointed that the options are so broad...

When did you get your housing survey? I didn't get mine yet.

on the mywm page there is a link to it, along with some other stuff. the housing thing is due may 30. the instructions were also in that tribe guide thing.

That's strange... we used to be able to rank the dorms in the order that we would like them.

In the housing survey last year, you couldn't rank the dorms. We had the same large, small, monroe, sharpe options.

theprez: I think you are only supposed to put Monroe or Sharpe if you are a Monroe or Sharpe scholar. I'm not sure, though. I do know that you can be put in Monroe even if you aren't a Monroe scholar, but I don't think it's your choice, it's just the random assignment process.

Also, a tip for all the freshmen filling out the housing survey: if you want to boost your shot at getting the best freshmen housing, pick large.

If you pick small, odds are you will get put in Botetourt, Brown, Taliaferro. Botetourt are the worst dorms on campus, while Brown and Taliaferro have poor locations on campus. Also none of them have A/C.

If you pick large, you will boost your shot at getting Dupont or Yates (also possibly Barrett?). Dupont, imo, is the nicest freshmen housing. Both Dupont and Yates have A/C.

Also, if you end up getting put in Botetourt, don't worry. Yes, it is the worst housing on campus but Botetourt kids seem to be the ones that bond the most with all of their hallmates...

We used to call it "Body Rot" in my day.

Thats funny because I never recieved any of that stuff. Do you know how I can reactivate myWM account? I can't seem to remember my login information...

I was put into Botetourt after selecting large housing on my survey. During orientation, I really dreaded my dorm (thanks to no AC)...but I grew to love it...

like datkid said, Botetourt people become closer to their hallmates...in fact, I had a friend in Barrett who wished he lived in the complex just for the closeness the hallmates had. And honestly, after orientation the temperature never really was that much of an issue. I was close to the rec, which I went to a lot, and the caf, not far from Swem, etc. so it wasn't bad at all.

Also, datkid forgot to mention Hunt...which also has quite a bad location back in CW.

Not sure what daughter picked on her survey last year but ended up in Botetourt and the posters are correct. She was miserable the first few nights without AC but bonded with her hallmates. Everyone was extremely close.

I lived in Yates my freshman year and loved it. Great location and AC! As an earlier post stated, if you select a large dorm your chances of getting AC improves, but that only really matters the first and last month of the year. (Of course that depends on what temperatures you find acceptable.) I think there are positives to all the dorms and, in the end, all of my friends seemed to be happy no matter in which dorm they lived.

Well, if you put <140, you'll probably end up in:
Brown
Hunt
Taliaferro
Botetourt Complex (Fauquier, Dinwiddie, Gooch, Spotswood, Nicholson)

If you select >140, those dorms include Barrett, Dupont, and Yates.

Barrett, Dupont, and Yates are by far the three best freshman dorms. Dupont and Yates have air conditioning; Barrett doesn't but it's old and pretty and has a good location right in between old and new campus. Dupont's the only freshman dorm with a 100% suite-style layout, with four students sharing one bathroom.

The Botetourt Complex is terrible. You'll share your non-airconditioned room with your roommate as well as the cockroaches. You've also got the longest walk to get anywhere on campus.

I'm afraid I don't know that much about Brown, Hunt, or Taliaferro, except that they are kind of tucked away in another corner of campus. Brown isn't even on the main part of campus, but is over amongst the shops in CW. Hunt is behind the Campus Center and the Reves Center, which puts it equally off the beaten path. On the plus side, if you live in Brown you'll have the Baskin Robbins right outside your door. Taliaferro is not quite as remote, but I also seem to remember my friends in Taliaferro complaining about how small the rooms were.

As far as Monroe, it sounds like you can only select the "Monroe" option if you are a Monroe Scholar and want to live in Monroe housing, but you may want to check with ResLife. I don't believe there are enough Monroe scholars to completely fill the dorm, but the vast majority of the rooms are filled by Monroe scholars. If you want to live in Monroe, my guess is you'd have to select the <140 option, as Monroe is 130 to 140-ish in size.

I don't think it's necessarily true that Botetourt residents form closer bonds just because they live in Botetourt. You make your own experience here, and that's true no matter what dorm you live in. I lived in Fauquier my freshman year, and I'm still living with some of my hallmates from that year. It's wonderful, but it's not unique to Botetourt. As long as you don't shut yourself away in your room all the time, you're going to bond with your hallmates. Be available and be outgoing. It's amazing how far that will get you.

So, the conclusions of this essay... everyone will form close bonds with their hallmates, no matter the dorm. Given that, why not try for a dorm where you're going to be comfortable (air conditioning and suite baths) instead of living with the roaches in the sweltering heat or tucked away in a remote corner of campus?

My d has requested to room with a friend of hers, who is a Monroe Scholar (my d is not). The friend was apparently told that non-Monroes can indeed live in Monroe with a Monroe roommate; also that it's expected that there will be rooms in Monroe in which neither student will be a Monroe.

After talking about it, my d and her friend decided to request non-Monroe housing; so, if they get their request, there will be at least one Monroe Scholar living in non-Monroe housing.

Six years ago, Monroe Hall filled up with Monroes and there was a large overflow housed in Hunt (two of the three floors). My d was one of the students assigned to Hunt. It may have been tiny, non-air-conditioned, and fairly inconvenient to much of campus, but my d loved it anyway. Her RA told my d that she was in the smallest double on campus, and I believe it. But there was an amazing bond created among the residents, and even today, as a grad living in DC, her freshman hallmates are among my d's closest friends.
