I'm a current freshman and I was wondering if any upperclassman can explain to me how housing works for next year? Is it the same process as going into freshman year or is it by some lottery?

Thanks!

It’s kinda complicated. There are different priorities, depending on your romomate(s), their community, and your average credits. You’ll figure it out. Also its 9 months away.

housing sign up is usually in march – you’ll get info well ahead of time as to how it works and there will be info sessions in the dorms to explain things.

to briefly summarize – you sign up for a room based on a priority which is a combination of where you live and where you want to live; and your credit hours and those of the other people you want to live with. if you have a group of people you plan to live with either in a room, suite, or apartment, you pick a leader who organizes the group on line and then is the individual who signs up on behalf of the group. you have a higher priority if you are staying in your current room/suite and filling it. lower priority if you want to move elsewhere in your community and fill a suite/room. still lower priority to move to another community.

if you aren’t filing a room/suite you have a fairly low priority – so its best if you have people you want to live with – communities usually have sessions where people looking for other people to live with can meet each other.

housing selection for apartments usually takes place prior to selection for other dorms so you know if you get into an apartment before you have to decide where else to choose.

everything is done on-line so you can see what rooms are available when its your time to sign up.

they have made some slight changes in the system some years, so don’t assume things will be exactly as they were in past years.

and most of all, don’t worry about this now – people are just getting to know each other – its way too early to worry about who you want to live with and where for next year.

one more thing – to participate in the housing selection, you have to pay your housing deposit by a specified date – so just pay attention when that info is sent out (again, its way early now).
