Housing

I got into U of I for engineering i was wondering what housing is preferred? studying is definitely the priority but love to party. So dont want a place where every day there r parties and ppl just dont sleep.
thx for your responses!

bump bump!!!

Look into Bromley Hall. There are definitely a lot of people here that party! On each floor there are 2 study lounges and Sunday thru Thursday they have study hours from about 8PM-1AM in the dining hall that’s proctored by an RA and is a great place to study. If you have any questions about Bromley just let me know.

I have heard that is hard to get to know kids at Bromley more so than in the dorms because kids keep their doors closed. Is that true? Do the RA’s do anything to get the kids to meet each other? Did you live there as a freshman? Are there a lot of out of state kids living there?

There’s certainly alot of “diversity” at UIUC, but the school seems to attract and admit the “study hard; party hard” skill set. If you truly want the “experience,” go for it on both ends. It’s all part of the school’s general formula and explains why UIUC is such a great place to spend your college years. Incoming frosh. make way too much out of their dorm choices. Any dorm will be a good choice. The streotypes are overblown.

gottagonow…at bromley it’s a lot harder meeting people because like u said nobody has their doors open. the six pack is a nonstop party. a lot
of people their go the library to study. Six pack students always have their doors open and everyone is open to meeting new people

Its true that everyones door at bromley is closed, but my RA did a lot to get the whole floor together. Most of my friends are from Bromley and I couldn’t complain about it. I know a bunch of people on so many floors and I feel like I know just as many people in bromley as others in the six pack know each other. All freshman are in the same situation here, and the first couple months everyone’s looking to make new friends. I agree with Savant that any dorm will be a good choice. You’ll make friends anywhere.

And yes, I’m currently a freshman and I live at Bromley. The food sucks, it really does, but honestly its tolerable. And idk about the out of state part; all of my friends are from Illinois (mainly Chicago area) but if you’re from out of state people aren’t not gonna want to be friends with you cause you’re out of state…

Thanks for all the input. illlinifan- I like the idea of the six pack but what if you find out in June that you are assigned to FAR? I thought the six pack was so popular that you run the risk of not getting in. I would rather live in Bromley than run the risk of ending up in FAR or somewhere other than the six pack if I were to choose non-private housing.

there’s ways to get into the six pack. my friend wanted six pack and was placed into FAR. She called and was ****ed and housijg told them she can wrote a couple essays to get into a LLC which is within six pack. there’s ways to get around it

I’m pretty sure there’s a way that you can apply to Bromley AND the put the six pack as your first pick and if you don’t get into the six pack you can live in Bromley but if you DO get into the six pack you can withdraw your application to Bromley with no penalty. (I’m not sure about this but I think its right.) Also, keep in mind, with Bromley you get semi private bathrooms which means that you share a bathroom with a double sink, shower, and toilet with another room. It is SOO nice. And a cleaning person cleans your room every other week. If you get a triple or quad, its cheaper than a double in University Housing. I"d highly recommend da Brom!!

Just curious, when does Bromley fill up? The website said “fast”, so I’m wondering if it would be an option to be able to live there if I’d be applying in April, after I hear back from other schools as far as scholarships go.

They say “fast” to get people to commit to going there. I know a friend that was put on the waiting list and got it. I’m not sure how fast it fills up but if you apply to live there in April you will have NO problem getting in.

Awesome, that’s a relief. Another question - I got a 30K scholarship on top of a full tuition scholarship, so the 30K will go towards room and board. Will this 30K be able to be used at Private Certified Housing like Bromley? Or am I stuck staying in the residence halls?

I’d email someone in admissions to get an answer for that cause i’m not 100% sure but i’d say that you should be able to use it towards room & board for PCH

That sounds good, but if I don’t want certified preferred housing what would be my best options? As is there special hoisin for James scholarship students??

Again thx for responses

No special housing for “Jas. Scholars.” Some pretty cool L.L.C.'s (Living Learning Communities,) hwvr., spread out among the university owned res. halls, e.g., Weston Exploration, Allen Hall Unit One, etc.

I want that freshmen experience and I strongly feel that I would be livin in a hotel at bromley. for me I don’t care that the room won’t be very big or that I’ll share a bathroom with the floor I wanna get that college feel.

I feel like i’m getting the full college experience… I felt the same way illinifan, and part of the reason that i wasn’t fully committed to Bromley was because i felt like it wouldn’t offer the full college experience too. Everything is the same as the six pack and other places I feel… You have an RA, instead of walking all the way down the hall to go to the bathroom you just open another door, you go to the main floor to eat (the food sucks) and you’re living with hundreds of other college kids…

how is the gym in bromley? like are there enough machines that there is rarely a wait for the one you need? or since (i’m assuming) it’s smaller, is it hard to get a chance on certain things?
