I have yet to receive my housing information. I heard from a reputable source that around 1/3 of freshman have also not received there info, so i'm not worried about that in and of itself. However, I was wondering if anyone knows whether the time at which you receive your housing form is at all related to whether or not you got your preference?

From last year, this is what I remember:

Generally,

You heard in the first 25%, you got your preference
You heard in the second 25%, half the people got their preference
You heard in the third 25%, no one got their preference
You heard in the fourth 25%, you either didn’t get your preference or got sexy overflow housing (converted lounges).

This is obviously not absolutely correct, but is how I remember it happening.

Sorry to hijack this thread but I have a question related to housing too: Do all freshmen (apart from those in single rooms) get to know their roommates on 1st August? Or does the roommate notification come in different batches too? I’m just so eager to know who my roommate is. :p

Aww man…well I’ll just hope for overflow I guess. Paper stars I know one guy who already found out his roommate so I’m guessing they do that in batches too

People only found out their roommates because of a temporary testing period from housing. They later sent out a message saying that the roommates are not “final” yet and that things may still chance, so what people saw about their roommates may not have been true.

From what I’ve heard, everyone should know by August 1st where they’re living and who their roommate is. Roommate notification should come out all at once.

I don’t know if it is true that you didn’t get your first choice if you haven’t heard, yet. We saw the roommate test message and it was the same info we got months ago from kid’s coach.

Yet, official info not up on website, yet…

According to test, she is in same hall she requested with same roommate she was told ages ago. Just not “official” until Aug 1st.

The housing director told us at orientation that the info is put up in batches.

They do take their time in notifying, don’t they?

I work in Housing. Not everyone heard by the 1st of August (in fact, housing was telling people middle of august, so I don’t know where that rumor came from). By now there are roughly only 100 people left who havent heard (should hear soon). Those people will find out their roommate info when they get their assignment. And that doesn’t mean they dont get any of their preferences. very few people actually get location preferences since there are more important things like roommates and the price of the rooms, as well as environment type.

That August 1st date was mentioned in Parent Orientation by housing director.

He said that most everyone would hear by that date. Indeed, that was true if only 100 of the 6000 kids have been informed.

Sounds like propaganda from the housing office. Most people I know think location is a very important consideration if not the most important consideration.

Has anyone ever hear anyone ask “What environment type did you get?”

I just called housing and the person on the phone said they haven’t placed a lot of people yet. She said I would hear by the middle of august… which is annoying because I’m supposed to do Move in makers where I move in early. I would love to know who my roommate is and plan what dorm stuff I need to buy. Thanks a lot umich housing.

@JesSEllen I still haven’t heard anything as well. I talked to the housing office earlier this week and they told me that in the random lottery they do to decide preference for housing I was number 2568 out of approximately 3000 freshmen girls. The woman I talked to explained that the majority of housing applications are processed by a computer, and those assignments are released before august 1st. For some reason they process the remaining applications by hand, and release those by the middle of August. She also mentioned that they tend to release assignments at the end of the week.

I too am very frustrated with this process. It’s rather difficult to buy things for a room without knowing anything about that room or other potential inhabitants of that room. Not knowing my roommate is especially annoying because there are many more expensive items (microwave, fridge, TV, coffee machine, etc.) that I would like to just split up with my roommate and then share. I would like to begin getting some of those things now, but, obviously, can’t because I don’t know who my roommate is.

I found out my housing assignment Thursday
