Housing?

How do you choose housing? They ask for top two choices - but can you choose your top two dorms within a neighborhood or do they mean you choose your top two neighborhoods? I want to live in Briscoe or Mcnutt. Also, I have a friend who will likely be my roommate but hasn’t officially committed yet - do I write down the name of my roommate now?

Also, do you choose the type of room as a priority? Just not sure how this process works and what I have to be prepared for.

I am not an expert and others can correct me if I am wrong. First, freshman can only choose an neighborhood, not a specific dorm, so yes, rank your top 2 neighborhoods. According to the RPS website, if the roommate thing is the most important consideration for you it must be ranked as your number one priority. Also, I believe both roommates must identify each other on the application. In other words, it must be a mutual request. I did read somewhere that you add or delete a roommate preference any time up until May 1 so that might solve your problem with your friend not yet being accepted.

Make sure you take a look at the learning communities. Learning communities are typically related to a specific residence and not a neighborhood.

There is a lot of information on the residential programs and services website. From what I have heard, every residence has pros and cons. Even if you don’t get your top choice, housing is only one part of your freshman experience and it is only for 1 year.

Good luck.

My S hasn’t decided where he will attend so we are putting down housing deposits for the top choices which allocate housing based on order of housing application received. For IU here is a hefty $200 deposit of which only $100 is refundable. He has been admitted to Hutton Honors - is he guaranteed honors housing?

Yes, to all @BCVIOLINMOM shared. The only thing I would add, is that you can only request neighborhood - not specific dorm, BUT you can specify the level of housing that you want and are willing to pay for. Each neighborhood has 3 levels of housing. In the northwest neighborhood Briscoe is the premium level housing and McNutt is the midlevel. My daughter is in the Kelley Living Learning Center in McNutt and really likes it. There is a fitness living learning community in Briscoe, I think. @Singermom4, not sure if you are guaranteed any type of housing, but I will say there are lots of Hutton kids in my daughter’s dorm. The learning communities are by application, but all other housing is assigned by priority date, so the earlier you submit your housing application the better. I have heard that some who applied in the first days it is open weren’t able to get their first choice neighborhood.

Yikes – now I have paid for two schools for my son – Minnesota and IU. Going to visit both and OSU in the next two weeks and hoping he makes up his mind then. You pay $300 and get $200 back if you cancel by July 1. Good luck everyone.

Did anybody else complete the housing application, get a digital/printable reciept, but not get the confirmation email in your IU email account?

my son did not get an email in his account either but we printed out confirmation and can view it in his university account
