Now that UCLA offers 3 years guaranteed housing for incoming freshmen, I'm curious as to how many UCLA students actually stay for 3 years or more on-campus. I'm asking because my dad has a friend whose son voluntarily opted out and started renting off-campus.

Don't worry. I have a feeling that by the time the Class of 2010 enters their third year, the deficit in housing availability caused by Sproul Hall's closure will be recovered and on-campus housing will once again be guaranteed for four years.

For housing? You don't need to. I think perhaps it's useful in the case they need to identify you when you left your room key and all ID in your room?

It's optional.

However, the passport-quality photo is a must for BruinCards, unless you plan to do that during Orientation.

Submitting a picture for BruinCard will save you time during Orientation. Otherwise you'd have to get there early and wait in line to do it. (They don't have time specifically alloted for that.)

Don't they have a PDF with samples? Well basically they want what you would get if you go out and get passport photos. So yeah, basically white background and your face will comprise most of the 2x2 (if I remember correctly) photo.
