Housing

I checked the website but still a little confused. It seems that after filling out an application for housing the student is assigned a time slot to pick their selection. Is the time slot given out by lottery or is that by given out by date of application? If my sons attends Cincinnati, he will be in DAAP ID but does not want to be in a quad - preferably a single or a single in a suite. Recommendations? It seems like there is a lot of studio time so is there a residence close to the DAAP building that would be best? Social is also a concern, so a residence that freshman choose would also be optimal. Thanks for the help!

Also curious about this topic. I am anxious to see what info is provided here. Son has a Soph and also a Freshman buddy attending already with possibly a current HS Senior that’s going to attend. All engineering students.

@singermom4 we are having the same discussions at our house. I think my D is leaning towards a double or a single in a slightly quieter dorm - so neither of the D dorms. she’s thinking Calhoun or Siddall. It looks like Stratford Heights might be the closest but it doesn’t seem like it’s “on campus”. It’s closer to fraternities from my understanding.

I would like her to be near other kids in DAAP so she has someone to walk home with after working late in the studio.

my daughter is a 4th year ID student (yes one more year till she graduates). she started off in a quad in daniels on a DAAP floor. she did not get along with 2 of her room-mates. she was then placed in a single on a non DAAP floor and loved it. after her freshman year she moved off campus into a house we purchased and we rent out the rest of the rooms to students. to meet non DAAP students she joined a sorority.

@daapmom thanks. did she end up having to work late in the studio? was she worried about walking home late at night or was there usually someone to walk with? that’s actually been my biggest worry regarding housing.

was she in Daniels? or a different dorm?

she was in Daniels. she never pulled all nighters. she was very diligent about timing everything. she did work alot on the weekends.

@singermom4 I am a current student at UC and check here occasionally to see what questions I can help answer. I would definitely recommend looking into Stratford Heights. They are right across from DAAP and have single rooms and doubles in most buildings. They are also close to CEAS @CollegeGuy2018 (my college). They are not “on campus” in the sense that the others are, but there is still a large community there. Crossing Clifton will get you back “on campus”. Check out the UC housing page- I know they allocate specific buildings and floors for different groups of students.

@daapmom that’s good to hear. Every post that I’ve read made it sound like the DAAP kids were always working late at the studio.

@ucceas2020 Thanks for the feedback. Are there any extra safety concerns with Stratford Heights being across the street rather than on campus? Women seem to be more diligent with finding a buddy to walk with at night - not sure my son will always do this. He is also a bit of a procrastinator so I think he will be working late. Also, he has a lot of instruments - are there many theft concerns within the dorms?

@singermom4 I wouldn’t say there are any extra safety concerns being in Stratford Heights. That side of campus has a lot of greek housing as well, so it seems like students are always out and about even late at night. There is off campus patrol and help buttons by all the walkways as well. Of course walking in groups and being vigilant is always a good idea in any city. To get into single rooms, you have a key to the common area and another to get into your individual room. I’ve never had any problems or heard of any problems with this. Glad to help!

@singermom4 the housing slots are assigned based on the week in which you give your housing deposit. My son signed up the first week and was able to get a double room in Daniels on the DAAP floor. There is only one double on his floor, most are triples and quads. He’s in his freshman year and very happy with his housing choice. The DAAP floor is very social and he has been able to make lots of new friends with similar interests. It is a bit of a walk from the DAAP building and he does spend many late nights in the studio. He walks to the dorms with a buddy and had no safety problems.

Can I put down a deposit to get in line without accepting admission? For my older ds we had put down 3 housing deposits - one wihich required admission (and withdrew admission later when he decided not to go there).

My daughter is a freshman DAAP student living in a quad on the DAAP floor in Daniels. She has one DAAP and 2 non-DAAP roommates. These rooms are very small for 4 people. Plentiful storage is about the only positive she sees in Daniels. It needs renovation. She spends most of her time in the studio- the students hang their hammocks and have coffee makers and it is very social. She has used Night Ride and walked back from DAAP late at night. The students spend many late nights there. It is about a 10 minute walk from DAAP to Daniels.

@designmomma do you know if there are any DAAP students in other dorms or is everyone in Daniels? We’ve read that Daniels isn’t as nice and my daughter really isn’t interested in a quad. She was thinking maybe Calhoun or Siddall. Thanks!

DAAP freshman are in many dorms as well as off-campus apartments and not all students on DAAP floors are in DAAP. Her first choice was a double in Siddall. Her lottery time slot (which was the first week) combined with the fact that she had already chosen a roommate left them with slim pickings. Trying to find a room in Siddall or Calhoun with two open beds was impossible.

How plentiful and/or popular are singles? I was thinking traditional dorm single vs a suite as that would encourage more socializing. My older ds had a single on an all single floor at his U and it worked out well. Is this type of floor available?

@singermom4 , yes you can give a housing deposit before accepting admission. In last year’s housing contract it states a $150 deposit is required. If you cancel within 15 days you get $100 back. If you cancel after 15 days you don’t get a refund and get an additional $200 penalty. My son did not have admission decisions from all his colleges at the time housing applications opened. I took a chance that he would select UC when I gave the deposit so that he would get early selection.

Oh wow! That’s a lot more than the other places. At UMN $25 non-refundable , at Iowa State - i think it was $40 and at Indiana University it was $200 but we had until May 1st regardless of when we put down the deposit. Not sure why the penalty is so steep, if you withdraw the housing application no one loses but the applicant - you don’t take a spot or time slot away from anyone. I can understand keeping something for a processing fee but beyond that is not reasonable.

I agree- that’s a steep price. Especially since you have to apply so early in the year. Unfortunately it can It create additional pressure for the student to accept the admissions offer. I don’t like this policy at all.

The students who know right away that UC is their top choice will be at an advantage and better able to secure their top housing preference. For the rest of us at least we’re now aware. It’s interesting how housing policies can be so different across institutions.
