Does anyone know whether housing choice is dependent on how soon you get in your deposit? Is there a benefit to sending it before the deadline?
If it works as in the past, the sooner you get your housing deposit in, the more likelihood you will get one of your top choices. Also don’t forget about filling out the survey for the type of roommate you want. Many students “find” their roommates on the facebook page for the class and you can put that request in too.
With Georgia Tech exceeding yield expectations the last few years, they have run out of housing or had to place students in less desirable accommodations (like a double that becomes a triple or using the lounge). I recommend you get your deposit in so that you do not end up in that type of situation.
Thank you!
My daughter is a 4th year, so this is based on her experience from 2015 - the process certainly could have changed. But, we found that just paying the deposit early didn’t help her get in a top choice dorm. Once you pay the deposit, your student should have access to the portal where they can rank their dorm choices. You are not in the “queue” for any dorm until this process is completed. My daughter didn’t get around to completing the information for a couple months and she ended up in a dorm that she didn’t even list. Of course, it wasn’t the end of the world. She survived and learned a valuable lesson in the process. So, you may want to check and see if dorm assignments will work that way this year. I don’t believe she had to list a roommate to complete the process - though it’s probably a good idea to list a roommate pretty quickly and make certain they have also paid the deposit and completed the process.
Good luck and welcome to Georgia Tech!
We paid the deposit last night and he listed his dorm choices. Not sure what he did about a roommate. I know he filled out the survey. There is only one kid he knows that he would want to room with and that kid won’t know any other options until regular decision. My child has not decided for sure yet but he wants to be an engineer, really likes Georgia Tech, and we are in state. Hard to compete with that! He doesn’t want to truly decide until he knows about a couple of other places but we decided we would rather lose the deposit then have him end up somewhere he did not want to be. Do you know if he adds his roommate choice later after regular decision comes out willl he lose his priority?
Both my daughter and her eventual roommate waited quite a while before submitting their dorm choices. So, losing housing priority was never an issue for either of them - they were both late getting it done. But, I have been told that priority defaults to the roommate with the latest housing application. Again, this was in 2015, so that could have changed. Someone with a more recent first year may know the answer to that. Or GT Housing would certainly have the answer to that.
@UVAmom23 Make sure your son applies to the “Grand Challenges” program if he is interested. My DD did it and it was a wonderful experience. (It does not add to the homework level since the GC class substitutes for another class). All GC students live together for their first year and get priority assignment for North Avenue apts their second year. Besides the academic benefits, the students really gain a lot socially. The GC students really bonded freshman year and work collaboratively over homework and their classes and it creates a very encouraging environment. When my DD was in GC, they would arrange for social events for the GC students and subsidize the costs so my DD got to go to many plays at the Fox Theatre, professional sporting events etc. Since the GC program subsidized my DD’s social life costs, it actually saved us some money. The GC staff are very supportive of their students and help with recommendations for scholarships etc.
At graduation in Dec., many of the GC students (including those who had graduated) came to my DD’s graduation party and it was fun to see how they are all still friends. In talking with the GC students, I was really impressed at where they were all headed job and graduate school-wise. Just passing on this opportunity so that your DS doesn’t miss it.
Thank you. We talked about that last night. I think the thought of filling out another application is making him hesitate. We will revisit! Sounds like a great program. He also will likely go through rush. I assume both are compatible?
Has anyone received their email with the housing registration time yet? I can’t find any information on line other than roommate preferences close today.
Housing selection numbers are out. My understanding is the selection date and time is via email.
