Wait...I thought early decision didn't matter in the housing process? Do EDers get preference? Because that would be really awesome... :)

All the dorms are social. Unless you like staying locked up in your room all the time, you will make friends with people in your hall and in your dorm. It's almost like having a second family. As long as you have any semblance of communication skills, you're going to make friends, and everyone is really nice at the beginning of the semester cuz everyone doesn't want to **** someone else off.

And no, housing for everyone is done at the same time, and EDers do not get any preference. Nor do you really get to choose where you want to live, other than Balch or the program houses. Although I'm pretty sure that if you're richer, have alumni connections, or have famous parents, then you'll get one of the nicer dorms and most likely can call housing to get a better room. For example, the son of the governor of NY lives in Mews, and oddly enough there are some weird arrangements in Dickson where some people have massive singles while others have forced triples, that might just be Cornell or it could have something to do with the person living there.

Am I being too hopeful in thinking that there are dorms where I would just get a single or a double with 1 private bathroom for myself/me and my roommate? Or is it at least 4 people/bathroom in all the dorms?

The only place where you would have that much privacy is with a townhouse, and even then I think it's still like one bathroom for 4 people, although I not particularly sure since there are many townhouses. And there are no private bathrooms, but 2 people do share a sink in balch.

congrats to everyone who got in. im currently a freshman at cornell and i live in Bauer Hall.

Bauer is the ****. You definitely want to live in Court/Kay/Bauer or Mews. Donlon is very social but VERY old--Court/Kay/Bauer however is rapidly becoming equally social. If you are interested in a single, I would request Dickson (5th floor if you can). The rooms there are HUGE. The townhouses are also very very nice--they have the biggest rooms and the fewest people to a bathroom. Court/Kay/Bauer and Mews are suite-style, so there are two doubles and one single to every bathroom which includes a toilet, shower, and two sinks. It's not bad at all, you rarely have to wait for a shower. For all you girls who want Balch--definitely go for a single. They are GINORMOUS.

email if you have questions. monkeymoose23@yahoo.com. happy to help

I'm in Donlon this year. Each floor has 70 or so people with three bathrooms. However, 1 bathroom is for men, 1 bathroom is for women, and 1 is unisex, meaning for both. The men and women's bathrooms have 5(?) stalls and 4 showers. The unisex has 4 stalls and 3 showers. The unisex was slightly awkward for the first week or two, but no one cares anymore. I've never had a problem finding a shower.

Donlon isn't the nicest dorm, but it is really social and the layout is really nice with a central lounge.

You guys should know that besides program houses and Balch, you can't request a certain dorm. For example, you can't request Mews, Court, Kay, Bauer, Donlon, Dickson, or the high rises. So don't spend too much time thinking about where you want to live, because if you don't request Balch or a program house, they're going to randomly put you somewhere.

Redcomet, you're not asking for too much if you're a girl AND if you live in Balch. Balch has HUGE singles (by far the biggest rooms on North) connected by tiny rooms with sinks in them (no toilet or shower). Other than that, bathrooms are built to accommodate a lot of people (Dickson bathrooms, for example, have 7-8 toilets and 4 showers that 20-25 people share).

I just got the dorm/meal plan selection package, and in the dorm part is says something about wanting either a quad room or a townhouse. I was under the impression that only the townhouses had quad type living, what other residence halls have quads?

I want to dorm in ujamaa..

dang... that sucks...

w/e, ill live. but does anyone know about the holland international living house?

Whats Risely like? I saw it has a Drag Ball?!

Are a lot of freshman accepted into the program houses? And for the culture-themed ones, you don't have to be of that ethnicity right..? (hahah stupid question I know)

I had a question regarding the early bird/night owl housing preference. I was wondering if they are directing this question to figuring out how people would prefer to live during the weekends or in general? During the week days it seems that you would obviously need to be marked down for an early bird because classes start early and you need to get up prior. However, during the weekends i prefer to get to bed a bit later (after 12) and would not want to annoy my roommate by my staying up. So to reiterate, are they asking this to find out one's weekend preferences, or do we need to consider the week days as well in this decision? Thanks in advance.

Redcomet, since Holland is a program house, you can request to live there (and I'd say you're almost guaranteed to get in). It really caters to international students, though (obviously), since many of them are trying to get adjusted to life in the US. It's open to everyone, though, and I'm sure you'd like it if you like living with international students.

mockfrog, Risley is a great place to live (from what I've seen and heard), especially if you're really into theatre, drama, performance, etc. (but lots of people live there who aren't interested in participating in any of those). They have their own theater, library and dining hall and the residents are all really close. It has a reputation (unfair) of being the "weird" dorm (unfair if "weird" has a negative connotation), but that's just because its residents tend to be eclectic. There aren't many (probably none) obnoxious frat boys or sorority party girls in Risley. You're much more likely to find a Risleyite attending a Shakespeare performance than a frat party on a Saturday night.

kefner, yes, lots of freshman are accepted into program houses. You have a great chance of getting into any of them. The only exception might be Risley, which tends to be quite popular among students of ALL years and so freshman sometimes don't get in. But you're very likely to get into any of the others- Ujamaa, McCLU, JAM, etc.- if you request one.

collegebound, you're definitely best off putting down what you do on the weekends. Honestly, most of your dorm is going to be awake after midnight every day of the week; the difference on the weekend is that some people(ranging from a very few to a lot depending on where you live; a few, for example, if you live in Risley or a townhouse, and a lot if you live in, say, Donlon) are going to be drunk and/or just plain loud. Also, when everyone goes to bed on weekdays largely depends on when their classes begin the next morning, which you really won't have much control over, especially as a freshman. So in short, I'd put your weekend preferences.

deep breath any other questions? (:

Ooh, and yeah, Risley has a Drag Ball. Haven't been to it yet, but from what I hear it's a lot of fun

I see... but the Risley house sounds hellaz tight now since I recently discovered how fun Drama is. Also, I planned to join the Cornell b-boy club and try to pick up the drums again (and maybe even piano). But yea, I applied online but I realized I applied for the 06/07 school year (why is that even one of the choices?). I feel like an idiot :)

But I hope I get in to Risley!

why wont they let girls dorm with guys? thats so sexist

can anyone comment on JAM?

how and where are the triples?

How are the townhouses? No one here seems to be considering them, but they look pretty sweet. I know they cost a little more, are like 300 meters further from everything, are somewhat isolated, and might not be fun if one of the four random people is psycho, but they do seem to have a lot of space and seem to be a pretty decent bargain and you can specifically request one. What do current students think of them?
