Housing

Anyone know if we can do this now? cuz I tried to fill out the contract but the only option is for housing from Jan-May 2007 - so does this mean we probably cannot start housing until regular decision applicants get their decision??
Also: ne thoughts on positives/negatives of rooming with friend? (im a guy- cuz I know girls hav trouble with their friends)

You can apply for housing starting January 2, 2007.

One change is that you cannot apply for housing until you accept the university's offer of admission. In past one could apply before deciding, as is the case at other IL state college, and receive a refund if one ultimately chose not to attend. My D would prefer Allen Hall but won't make her final decision till March or April, so we worry she may not get into Allen--this concern may influence her decision.

bookmom:

Can you accept offer of admission, apply for housing and then break contract ( just in case you get admitted someplace else you preferred or fin. package was better)? I read the contract and it states that so long as you cancel prior to May 1, you will receive refund. Does that mean you can renig on your decision to attend the school?

mominchicago, I considered that option but haven't checked it out--don't know what if any repercussions there are from accepting at one school while still waiting to here from others (or interviewing for scholarships at others)...I think the FAFSA records indicate all schools receiving the info??? altho I doubt the housing folks and the FA folks cross paths. Other than the personal ethics conflict, I don't think there would be a problem. I am just irritated that we have to accept the offer whereas many other schools allow students to make the down payment and apply for housing without having first accepted the admissions offer. UILL seems to have changed several things this year!

UIUC has had problems in the past where more students were signing up for housing, then later changing their minds about which school to attend. It has led to many problems of students getting deferred to temporary housing on a cot in a lounge while the university sorts out where there was a room assigned to a person not ultimately attending the university. This new system will hopefully avoid the issue of students in temporary housing.

And bookmom: particularly for Allen, waiting until March or April SEVERELY inhibits your daughter's chance of getting a room in that hall. Allen is very popular not only for it's Unit One program, but for it's proximity to the main quad. Waiting until March or April would most likely place your daughter somewhere in PAR/FAR or the six-pack.

divinity287:
Not that I'm aware of how the old system was, but how does the new system avoid the same problems? Seems to me that if you are allowed to cancel housing contract (and receive refund if cancel prior to May 1 ) at the last minute, those housing problems are still there. I am aware of the ethical issue here, but come on, some of these kids are hoping to get admitted to smaller and more selectice schools. Not that UIUC is a terrible school, but I have issues with the lack of academic advising and number of TA's. UIUC has to understand that some kids will opt to cancel contract if offered a better financial award elsewhere or if they get admitted to a school that was higher up on the list.

And then the problem is with kids like yours who make up their choice then change it and then a person like me was stuck with temporary housing until late July of last summer, when my mom and I feverishly called practically everyday to try to get out of temporary housing.

Why don't you understand that instead of switiching schools all the time. I made my decision around Apr. 25th, looked at all my options, etc..

Try making a well-thought decision and maybe you won't have cancel your housing contract

dont let not getting into allen change her choice of going to U of I... it would be a relatively small part of her freshman year experience and even smaller part of her 4 years at the university.

i hope shes liberal, cause i know some weirdos in allen.

oh yeah, I'm a moderate, history secondary education major who volunteer tutors, builds sets for student theatre groups, goes to all of my 16 hours of classes each week while holding down a part-time job and several leadership positions in student organizations. I don't drink, I don't smoke, and I don't do drugs. I like meeting new people and learning about different cultures and ways of life, and embracing the diversity of the human race.

I am SUCH a 'weirdo.'

The extremely liberal "weirdos" as you call them are only the most visible dynamic of Allen's population. Jeez, Allen even has several huge supporters and participants in Christian student groups such as InterVarsity.

"I am SUCH a 'weirdo.'"

i said i know some weirdos in allen. do i know you? i hope not, so you arent the weirdo i speak of. im not saying you arent a weirdo though :-P

taffy, you are guilty of the same misconceived logic of which you accuse me. you argue that just because I know some people who didn't get in, doesn't mean legacy doesn't help.

well, just because you know some 'weirdos' in allen, doesn't mean the girl has to be liberal to enjoy living in allen.

I would say my artsy daughter is 'quirky' at least in hair and dress. She is into photography, painting and alternative music and has a small nose piercing and is way left of Bush. She also wants to be an attorney (at this point) but has the sensitivity of an artist and loves fashion. Because she is shy and not overly assertive (bad for a lawyer!) and is primarily considering LACs or smaller unis, she feels Allen/Unit 1 is the way to go for her--a smaller 'community' feeling with her alternative types. We have prepaid state school tuition so are secretly rooting she settles on UIL but she is spooked by the thought of 30K undergrads when her LACs are under 2000 total. Any suggestions on overcoming this fear of hers (so she can make a decision on a school in mid Feb and we can get an app into Allen!). No matter how many scholarships or FA she gets from private schools, it will be tough to top paid tuition and fees at Champaign. Apparently she can't 2nd major in studio art since she is accepted in LAS/psych but the pre-law path should keep her busy. I keep telling her she can find ANY kind of group or people-type she wants at C-U and I think Green Street campus town is cool compared to some of the non-existent campuis town surroundings of many LACs she is considering. Help--mom needs pluses about BIG UI for D to consider.
