Does anyone know which dorm is closest to Jason Downer Commons? I like to be close to food. :)

Kohler is right next to it. I believe Kohler is the substance free dorm, however, if that matters to you.

Here's a map: http://www.lawrence.edu/about/lumap.pdf

Congratulations to all, by the way, on their acceptances and scholarships!

Kohler is ok. I personally like Sage which is the next closest dorm to downer. It depends on your personality. Where you live freshman year is the biggest predictor on who you hang out with and your social life the next four years.

kassos, my D has not had the opportunity to visit Lawrence yet, so we know nothing about the dorms. Could you possibly give a brief description of the "personality" of each dorm? Thanks!

Just curious, is Herb Kohler a big donor to Lawrence? My D was just accepted EA and I'll also love to get an overview of the dorms.
Thanks in advance...

Relevant to Freshman only-

I lived in Plantz my freshman year as a music major and it was an incredibly social dorm full of freshman Connies (conservatory students). It's the only dorm north of College Ave which means you have to cross the street everyday to eat or go to class. The same cannot be said of Sage which is a more upperclassman kind of dorm and has a more anonymous living style. Doors aren't left wide open like they are in Plantz (most of the time)

I can't say much for the other dorms. I know that Trever (Plantz's sibling dorm) is underrated. Most people overstate the distance factor but the entire campus is quite humble in its size. A walk from one end to the other takes seven minutes. While a view from a Plantz window yields a parking lot and a noisy avenue, you will enjoy trees and a possible view of the river from Trever.

Ormsby is the smallest and oldest dorm that mixes freshman sophmores juniors and seniors up the most. It's very centrally located. Nice dorm, high ceilings, wood floors. 2nd floor had a great social scene my freshman year. Your mileage may vary.

Colman is ok. The rooms have sinks and closets. You also get to live in the same building as Lucinda's dining hall. But other than that I get a bad vibe from the people there.

And lastly Kohler which is in it's own world. The rooms have sinks which is nice, and it's very quiet most of the time. They seem to have a pretty tight-knit community.

Other than Hiett, my favorite is Sage. Close to Downer. Disruptive sophomoric behavior is kept at a minimum. Wonderful basement, probably the best on campus. Not the best dorm for freshman though. That award would probably go to Plantz unless you're not the social type in which case Kohler would be better for you.

Thanks, kassos!

Any other questions? I'm happy to answer as best I can. And I don't work for admissions.

I'm a freshman and live and Sage and love it. You won't know everyone on your floor because the halls aren't straight, so you kind of know the people in your area, though. My roommate and I live in the very very corner of the world. It's pretty much awesome because we're kind of close to everything. We are close to Downer, relatively close to the library, close the frat houses and Trever(good on the weekends).

For any current/former students–what is the “personality” of Kohler? Does it lean conservative, politically? I’m a nearly-socialist liberal who doesn’t see the point in polluting her body with alcohol or drugs.

to the OP–realize that there will a new site for the food next Fall. On the map that is linked to above, it is #39, campus center building site overlooking the river. So in light of this, someone can comment what are the closest dorms. It looks like Sage is the closest dorm to the new Campus Center.

sage looks like neat from the pictures - built 1917. Does anyone know if it wd be characterized as more of ‘a party dorm’ ? I notice that is is right across from the greek row.

Again, still holds true… (copy and paste)

Sage will be the best dorm to live in next year because it’s right next to the brand new Campus Center.
