which are usually the freshman dorms?

Upper & Lower Quads, Boothroyd, Towers, and Terraces. Some freshman MAY be put into Emerson, but it's mostly upperclassmen.

If you're looking for ONLY freshmen, you'll want to indicate that on your housing preference forms. They have a First-Year Program (I think it's called) where you'll either live in Boothroyd, Rowland, or Talcott and be with ONLY freshman.

I was wondering if there are any freshman that live in Emerson. Also, as a freshman would it be difficult to meet people in Emerson?

What are the terraces like? Do you know anyone who has lived in the extended quiet hours dorm? What is it like living in these dorms? thanks

There are some freshmen who live in Emerson, but many of the ones I know moved to other dorms because they said it's impossible to meet people. Most freshmen live in the Quads or Towers. The Terraces is primarily sophomores but some freshmen live there.

The atmosphere in Emerson is very different than the rest of the dorms. Ppl have the doors closed, etc. I would count on being close with other people in emerson. You would have to rely on classes, activities, etc. to meet people. There are a fair amount of freshman there though.

I wasn't sure what you said about meeting people in Emerson. Is it difficult for a freshman to live there socially?

If you're looking for the average progression it would be some thing like this

Freshman - Quads, Towers, (few) - Terraces, Emerson
Soph - Towers, Terraces, Emerson, (few) - Garden Apartments
Junior - Garden Apartments, Circle Apartments (if you apply with sr), or Off-Campus
Senior - (less) Garden Apartments, Circle Apartments, or Off-Campus

which quads are the nicest/most central? i didn't get a sense when i visited. thanks

All the quads are basically the same. For most central I would say you'd want to go for Upper Quads, which are Hilliard, Hood (substance free), and Holmes. As a freshman, you could also include Rowland and Talcott (they are freshman-only dorms). I lived in lower quads fresh. year and upper soph. year and LOVED living in upper.

thanks! i think im going to go for the upper quads, not substance-free, so i guess that narrows it doen to hilliard and hood. im debating about freshman housing...do you think there are benefits to that? while it would be nice to get to know a lot of people in my class, i also feel like having some people who have been at ithaca for a year would be a nice balance. which upper quad did you live in? were the rooms nice? i am hoping for a double, not a triple or quad...is that possible? i havent gotten this info from ithaca yet, so im kind of in the dark. thanks for any input!

There are no triples or 4-persons in the quads (except if you get placed in temporary housing, which is a whole other topic). There ARE Triples in other areas, and 4-persons are only in Apartments, as far as I know. You said you didn't want substance-free, then listed Hood as one of your options -- Hood IS the substance-free dorm. If you wanted a mix of floormates (ie not just freshman) and didn't want substance free, you would need to be in Hilliard or Holmes.

I can't really say anything about the FYE (First Year Experience) living situation as I never did it, but if you call ResLife, they might be able to tell you more.

I have lived in both upper and lower quads, and they're really almost exactly the same. I liked living in upper quads better just because of the location and the proximity to the fitness center/Library/Towers.

Let me know if you have any other questions!

yea i have the same question as k123l. is it a good idea to go for the first year program? anyone...

as a transfer student coming from a CCC and attending Park, what would be the recommended spot?

Park is a far walk from the towers/terraces

i would suggest the lower quads.

I just registered and there seemed to be very few options left. I registered for Hood , although I am not opposed to alcohol, and would not have chosen this dorm if there were other options. Is this dorm very different than the others? What are the kids that register for this dorm like?
