What is, in your opinion, the neighborhood with the largest and best dorm rooms? I've heard good things about Foster, but I want as many opinions as I can get.

So far I'm focusing on the Northwest and Central neighborhoods but am totally open to other options! I just want the best dorm room possible. :)

Have you searched other threads concerning housing at IU? That would be the best place to start.
Now, what are you looking for in a dorm? What kind of atmosphere and environment? What kind of person are you- social, quiet? What kind of friends would you like and what is your major? Or are you just searching for the largest room possible? You could just ask for a single or double single somewhere. Those are quite large.

Anyone know where the smart yet non-nerdy people live?

i read the previous posts on housing and apparently wright and teter in CENTRAL are the best options if you want a balance between your academic and social life.
I am a finance major and planing to apply to wright.

My D signed up for housing in the SE thinking she could pick Read but finding out she could only pick section not building. So it looks like she will end up in either Read or Forest. I read they are installing air conditioners in a tower at Forest but assume as a freshman she probably wouldn't get one of those?

How bad is it without air conditiong? And this might be a stupid question but my D wants me to ask if they do have heat - it's not listed on the amenities.

Thanks

I agree that Central is probably the best area to get a good balance on social and academic communities. Without air conditioning it is not fun for the first month or so, but with plenty of fans it is not a problem. Also, you can get an air conditioner in any room as long as you provide a doctor's note, which is easy to get if you just tell them that without it you won't have air conditioning. And everywhere on campus has heat.

It's correct that you cannot request a dorm, only a neighborhood.

MomofaPrincess, find out if you can use a window unit. My older son had one as a freshman and it was always nice and cool in his room. He was in Wright. You would have to purchase it, and the school wants to be the one to install it, but at least she wouldn't be frying. All dorms are heated.

Also, if your DD is planning on having a roomie, you can split who brings what. My son brought a television, DVD player and stereo and his roomie bought an a window unit air conditioner and brought his gaming system. We split the cost of the fridge/microwave unit which we rented.

Hope that helps.
