Housing

If someone from WPI reads this, could you please comment on housing. If someone wants to live on campus all four years, is there enough? What is it like? Is it hard to get and find if there isn't enough on campus? Thanks!

I just visited WPI today and was told that while they do not guarantee housing on campus all 4 years, it has never been a problem for students who want to live on campus to get housing. Off campus apts are in about a 1-2 block radius and many upperclassmen do chose to live off campus.

They just built a new residence hall this year and ended up having ~15 extra spots in one of the old dorms. They do housing selection a few weeks ago and then keep certain dorms open for freshman. They are trying to get more people to live on campus from now on.
By the time school rolls around, in the last 5-10 years they have not had any student (talking mainly about upper classmen but applies to incoming freshman, although they get stuck in forced triples, some times for the whole year) not get on campus housing, they may just not have gotten their top choices.

And for my rant. They always have forced triples for freshman housing and they are increasing class sizes, but they filled the new building with upper classmen, and all the dorms they usually do. I don't know if this is for $$ or stupidity.

i have heard that living off campus can reduce your costs. can anyone be specific as to how much living off-campus costs each year?

I know someone who is paying 400/month (utilities included) and is living on one floor with 4 or 5 other people.

On campus is ~6400 for an apartment the same size without a meal plan. If you live in upperclass apartments not in Founders then you are not required to have a meal plan.

Your financial aid may be reduced if you live off campus, although in my case it was between living on campus and at my house, so they may have taken off because I was not technically going to be renting. Off campus is better if you plan to live there all year, i.e. get an internship or job nearby or don't like your house.
