Housing

I was just wondering how many years of housing those who were accepted to bc received. It says I have four years and my mom says that it is not a common thing. I know that my sister was accepted many yeasr ago and only got three years. Did the school expand their dorms and is this considered the norm now?

I got 4 years too

i got four years.

yeah, i figured it was pretty much guaranteed now, but i was just wondering :)

well, last year it was definetly not guarenteed. i am one of the only people i know here that has 4 years of housing. only one of my friends does. usually the highest stats/minorities get 4 years of housing is what i heard, not sure if its true. you guys are lucky though! now you dont have to worry about living off campus jr year, expecially if you want to go abroad!

there are no new dorms being built right now.. in the next 10 years they acutally plan to knock down edmonds (upper classmen) and some of the mods (upperclassmen) as a part of their campus recontruction thing. right now housing is acutally at a shortage and a handfull of sophomores have to live in a freshman dorm (though i heard theyll get moved out by the start of next semester)

where does it say how many years of housing you've received?

Where does it indicate the number of years you will receive housing in the acceptance package? I think I must have missed it. Thanks.

It was in the acceptance letter for me last year, check there.

You're right. I see it now. Somehow I managed to miss it. Thx!

4 years does not go to everyone...bc does not have enough housing to do this. It's supposed to go to nursing and LSOE students, the top 15% of admitted students, athletes in top sports, and people who have medical needs. Then, BC fills up whatever spots are left (if there are any left) randomly. BC did expand housing in the 90s, but hasn't since, which is why a big part of their 10 year plan includes building more residence halls.

js0406, any idea why the 4 year guarantee only goes to nursing and LSOE, etc.....
Thanks for the info by the way

LSOE students are not guaranteed four years of housing. My very lovely D only received three. She is living off campus this year (her junior year).

I know it goes to nurses because they have to be in the hospitals starting soph year, and most of the LSOE students I know also have housing for four years because they get placed in schools. I guess BC feels that it's easier for these students to go to their placements if they leave from campus. Dogwood's D only got three years, but there are some nurses and even some honors kids with only 3 years as well - the only thing I can say to that is that sometimes BC just messes up. The list I gave is what they tell us to tell visitors to the admissions office, but there are always exceptions I guess.

My son only got three years. It's usually the junior year that you live off campus? I thought it would have been the senior year.

Junior year is the best time because many juniors go abroad for one semester, so it is just easier to do it that year. It seems like BC is a school that most of the students want to live on campus, so the majority of the students who do live off campus are those only guaranteed three years. I appreciated that BC tells you that up front (three vs. four) how many years you will have housing. For some, that may influence their decision on attending or not.

yeah, its just like dogwood said, everyone wants to live on campus. i also think (though its only a guess) that if most people were given the option they would like to live on campus senior year too. even though i think it would be fun.. it becomes really difficult when you want to go abroad (i think i read that 40% of BC students go abroad?)

and everyone wants to live in the mods senior year, which are little two story condo type things with a kitchen living room, and bedrooms upstiars situated right next to alumni stadium and in their own little pavillion area. sorry im really not describing it well, but if you are a partier.. DEFINETLY the place you want to live senior year. it can be non-stop there at times.

Yeah, I wasn't sure if it was a sure thing or not because my best friend also got accepted and received four years of housing. There are actually five other people who were accepted to bc this year from my school. I wonder how many years of housing they got...

I only got three years, kinda s ucks. Although the 4th year is not guaranteed is it still possible to live on campus in that 4th year?

you can appeal for housing if you wish i live on campus junior year. ive always heard people talk about it but ive never know anyone who did, probably because im only a freshman. but i do hear other freshman saying they WANT to try and appeal the one semester theyll be here during jr year.

My D did appeal and was turned down (and she is LSOE). After she had committed to a place off campus, she did get a letter from housing and was offered a spot (this was about 6 weeks after the initial denial). She knows several who were offered spots the same time she received the offer (this was about May/June of '07 - some decided to take the on campus placement, but others had already signed leases at that point and could not get out of them.
Boston88 - I'm not sure what you mean, but my D always assumed she would be off junior year and would be on senior year. That is just how things are done at BC. We do know a few kids who were only guaranteed one year of housing (transfers) and they were on campus for second year, off this year, then applied and were given housing for their senior year and are going back on campus next year.
I do think BC tries to accomodate the requests, but they can never be quite sure how many rooms will be available, due to junior year abroad.
The only problem I have with the off campus housing junior year is that so many students feel the need to commit to a place for junior year during the fall of their sophomore year. There is so much money committed so early and I personally don't see the need for that.
