What's the deal with freshman housing? Is it rolling depending on who sends in the deposit

And while talking about freshman housing, when is the deposit due for them? (I can't keep straight one school from the next and who requires what.) I don't want to miss something important. Do you have to give a housing deposit when you don't even know if you're going to this school yet? I'm so confused!

Once you pay your deposit for attending, then the housing deposit is due. The due date changes as it depends upon when they receive your initial deposit. Housing deposit is refundable but the original deposit isn't.

You will get a housing packet after your initial deposit is paid and it will have the due date for the housing deposit and the return of the housing/dining contract.

i mean, other than paying the deposit, is getting a single even an option for freshman?

I seem to recall you can put down requests but there is no guarantee you will get what you want. I believe the singles may be popular with the upperclassmen and they get to choose their housing before the freshmen are assigned their housing. If I am wrong about this, I am sure someone can correct me.

Last year, a couple of my daughter's freshmen friends had singles in Tower C, so I know that it can happen.

I visited Pitt last week and my tour guide was a freshman with a single.

We have paid admission deposit but have not received any info about housing. I sent them an email and they said they would be sending out the housing packet in Feb/March. Should we have sent something in and not wait on them????

Housing told me the same: They will be sending information/forms in mid-March...

My D is a freshman and ended up in a single in Holland. She did not request a single and most of the girls in singles at Holland did not request. I think if you WANT a single you have a pretty good chance of getting it - especially if you are a female and OK living in the all women dorm. Another friend ended up in a single in Lothrop - which I don't think is the best dorm to live in. And while my D did not want to be in a single in Holland - it's worked out fine - there were other girls in singles and they sort of teamed up together the first few days and the dorm is in a nice location.

As far as I understand it doesn't matter when you send your housing deposit in in terms of which housing you get. If you are interested in a Learning community those do fill up fast though - so if so, make sure you indicate that as soon as you put your deposit down.

^^^Glad to hear the single in Holland worked out for your daughter! My D is considering a single in Lothrop for next year (she'll be a junior). The rooms seem to be large. Can you please tell me why you don't think it's a good dorm? I know the noise from the helicopters can be loud. Anything else?

I think it's mainly the noise with helicopters and emergency vehicles. I also heard that there are a lot of nursing students in Lothrop -which makes sense since it's right across from the hospital. I also think it's not as central as being in the Quad or Towers to getting around on campus. My D's friend who is Lothrop was not happy initially but I think he is doing OK there. Good luck to your D with the housing lottery and getting the housing she wants.

My D lived in Lothrop for 2 years. She requested it as a freshman because she wanted a single. She is also a nursing major and opted for the living learning community. There is only one floor dedicated to nursing students and that is the 13th floor. Yes, she knows of other nursing students that live on other floors, but not as many as you would think. There are tons of freshmen and sophomores that live there with a few juniors in the mix.

As far as the helicopters go, you get used to them and she didn't even notice them after the first week. Worse thing about Lothrop is no air conditioning, but that was only bad her freshman year end of August beginning of September. It was really hot that year. The entire building (give or take a few rooms) is singles. Everyone is in the same boat in making friends and most people keep their doors open. Lothrop really isn't that far from dining. You have Market Central, the Pete and the dining hall on the hill (I think it is in Sutherland).

D would be willing to live there again, but is opting for Bouquet Gardens as a junior so she can have a little more freedom than what the regular dorms offer.

I'm considering attending Pitt next year as a freshman, and if I did, I would really want to be in the Towers. Is there any way to request this housing? I haven't sent in my initial deposit yet because I've been waiting to hear back from my other schools, but do you think I should? Will I be at a disadvantage (in terms of housing) if I wait to send in my deposit?

Yes, you will have the opportunity to submit requests, but I can't remember when in the process that happens.

You are not at a disadvantage to wait until May 1 to reply and make your deposit for housing. You will receive a packet with the information on all the dorms and then you prioritze where you want to live. Most freshman live in towers but not everyone who puts Towers as their choice gets it. It is determined by lottery. My D who is a freshman wanted to be in Towers but ended up in a single in Holland - which originally was very upset about but it has worked out fine. Each year you are given a lottery number and choose housing based upon that. Also there are learning communities and if you get into one of those you are guaranteed housing in that dorm - so you may want to look into some of the freshman learning communities as most of them are in Towers.

Hi...I'm 95% going to go to Pitt, and so I sent in the $300 or so for guaranteed housing...is that binding? In other words, is there anything permanent about doing this? I had read on the parent forum that many people do this to reserve space at rolling schools, so I assumed I was doing the same, to reserve space. Again, I am probably going to Pitt, but I was just wondering

I assume you sent the initial deposit to the school (which reserves your place in the school). The initial deposit is not refundable but the housing deposit is (unless they changed it this year).
