which dorm is the best

If you are a freshman, you really should try and join a FIG. That way you are already know a few kids in three of your classes.

Basically any of the renovated dorms are really good. The Virginia Union complex is probably the best, since it isn’t a renovation, but rather built in 2004. But you probably aren’t going to get into those as a freshman.

Mark Twain kind of stinks, because it has a ton of weird journalism kids who think they’re better than the rest of the university, as well that it is separated from the rest of he university.

Dorms like Gillett, Hudson, Cramer, etc. The old school dorms, with community living, those are generally really ****ty complexes, that aren’t the greatest to live in, but they also tend to be the most social.

What about the new ones mid-campus? I want to live in a dorm that isn’t too crappy, but I also want somewhere really social.

The crappier the dorms, the more social. In the new and renovated dorms, doors shut themselves behind their own weight. Most people arent going to take their time to prop their doors open all the time, which leads to it being less social.

Btw, I think the extended campus housing option “Tiger Diggs” at Campus View is the cream of the crop of housing options. You get a single room for ~$4500 (regular single rooms cost around 7k, doubles in the renovated are like $5,800 or so). You get an HDTV in the living room, a kitchen, washer/dryer in unit (don’t have to pay for that), WIFI in the apartment. They have a clubhouse, pool, basketball and tennis courts all there at the apartment. Free parking. And they have a shuttle going to and from campus, so you don’t have to worry about transportation.

hey akhman, do you know how far away those campus view apartments are from the campus?

current mizzou student here. feel free to PM me any additional questions.

I lived in Discovery last year as a freshman. I really liked it but the above poster is right–there is definitely less sense of community in the Virginia Ave dorms. I’ve heard that College Ave is similar to Virginia Ave, and Hatch has a little more community feel. If you’re looking for the community feel, Gillett, Stafford and Cramer (I think Stafford’s the only one open next year though) are great for that. If you’re in the College of Education or Journalism or Engineering, a lot of those FIGs are housed in Mark Twain. A friend of mine did that last year and absolutely loved it. It’s a little further than the rest of the dorms, but it’s not inconveniently far away. If you’re looking for a good community and want to do a FIG, Twain’s great for that. Johnston and Lathrop tend to be a lot of Greek women and other girls that are looking for the all-girls environment. North, Center, and South are popular too; all the football players are housed in South and many athletes are in North and Center. North, Center, South, Jones, Lathrop, and Laws are super convenient for home football games (which are a definite must!) All in all though, the dorm situation here is great. I can’t think of any one dorm that gets complained about a lot, so as long as you can roll with it (if you happen to not end up in your top choice) you’re going to be great!

And for Tiger Diggs/Mizzou Quads, I really wouldn’t recommend those. The people that I know who have lived there generally aren’t too happy with figuring out transportation to campus and the community feel is pretty much lost in an apartment complex. I’ve heard that they’re a lot stricter with alcohol and drugs in Diggs/Quads than they are on campus, and using your required meal plan is a pain if you’re off campus (this might be changing with the new school year though). Plus, you’ll have plenty of time to live off campus soph jr and sr years, so don’t rush into it too much!

Mizzou is great, you all are going to love it I promise, and if there’s anything I can help you with, just let me know.

Go Tigers!
