As a high school senior seriously considering UW for my freshman year, what is housing like? Is it possible to find low-cost and decent apartments close to the campus? Any suggestions?

What about the dorms? Are there any non-obvious benefits to staying in them?

It would be wise to stay in a dorm your first year so you meet people. Lots of people like Lander. Search this forum for dorms and you’ll find lots of info

I think it’s too large, the rooms are too small, the people too loud and too plentiful, but I guess that’s just me. And it’s not exactly centrally located.

I’d go for any north campus dorm (McMahon, Haggett, McCarty, Hansee) before Lander or Terry.

I’m a UW frosh living in the dorms, and I would recommend it for freshman year. Lots of cool opportunities in the dorms, don’t have to worry about cooking/cleaning, you get to meet people, and I love leaving my room less that 10 minutes before class starts and still getting there with time to spare.

A lot of freshmen do live in Lander, so that’s kind of nice for meeting people. I haven’t been in Lander, but I’ve been in Terry (basically the same dorm since they are connected) and the rooms seem okay as long as you are not put in a triple. And it is really close to the Ave, so a lot of access to food, shopping, etc.

If you don’t care about whether or not the people you live with are strictly freshmen, I would recommend Haggett, which is the dorm I live in. You are guaranteed not to live in a triple since Haggett’s furniture is all built in, and there are walk-in closets and the rooms are pretty big. It’s also pretty decent socially. And it is on North campus which has a lot more of a connected feeling to campus since it really is on the actual campus.

And if you don’t want to have to use a hall bathroom, McMahon and Steven’s Court are the ones to go for. McMahon is pretty hard to get into as a freshman though.

New dorms are being built on South campus near Lander-Terry, as well. Two dorms will open in Fall 2011, and an apartment-style one will open in Fall 2012. The dorms will be doubles with private baths, and the apartments will be similar to Steven’s Court with like 4 bedrooms (I think the bedrooms may be doubles) and a kitchen and all that. The new dorms will probably be pretty competitive to get into as a freshman and maybe even a sophomore because they will be by far the best dorms on campus, but it is something to look forward to if you want to stay in the dorms for a few years.
