Any tips for finding rooms for share near UCI? Also places to avoid living in?

Do you mean dorms?

Both dorm communities(Mesa Court & Middle Earth) are nice places to live in, although the older dorms are not really good(Phase 1). They are not terrible, its just that thyey are old and not as nice looking.

For apartments, VDC is excellent, but Campus Village is mediocre and looks quite outdated. Its convenient, but that is about it. The apartments in University Town Center, along with the majority of off campus apartments located within close proximity are good options as well.

Are you going to be a freshman or a sophomore?

I’m going to assume that you are going to be a freshman, since if you were to be a sophomore next year, you should already know about these things just from e-mails that UCI sends its students.

I’m also going to assume that you do not want to dorm, since it is pretty expensive. If this is the case, then yes, you can find an apartment to live in, UTC has plenty. Their rates range from 1900-2200 per 2bed/2bath apartments. You can share a room with someone, so if 4 people live in an apartment, rent per person will range from 475-550.

I’ve never been in one of those apartments, but the website says that the room’s dimensions are around 11inches by 12inches. (thats pretty small imo). If you do not mind sharing a room, and are on a budget, that is the way to go.

These apartments are also within walking distance from campus. (from 2-10 minute walks)

Arroyo Vista is also not a bad idea. Rates are pretty good, around $560 for a shared room. It’s not an apartment, the structure is more like a middle earth dorm building. They also have ACADEMIC YEAR leasing, which is good, depending on the student of course. AV, you would have to take the shuttle, which runs until 11pm mon-thurs, and 7pm fri.

I’m not sure if you would be able to live in VDC or VDC Norte as a freshman, since those apt’s are already in high demand by the upperclassmen.

CV or AV or the UTC are the ways to go for you

Thanks for the information. I will actually be transferring as a junior. I think apartments would be better than a dorm. Is there guaranteed housing for transfers like at UCLA?

there is, but usually that means CV or AV which is like dorming. you may have a better chance for an apartment this year because they are completing a new housing community (opening this fall) that is for upper division students, 3rd year and up. it’s pretty pricey so i don’t know how many apartments are already filled.
