I'm curious about housing for Freshman year. I will be a SMAD student, so my major is in a building on the Quad, but freshman year where will my classes be? I like the village suites, but the newer buildings like Potomac are nice too. What would be more convenient?

HI
I’m going to be a freshman next year too
when I visited they said that you can house pretty much anywhere freshman year because your gen. eds. can be…anywhere.
sorry if I couldn’t help much!

My daughter is a freshman at JMU. She lives in Potomac and loves it. She appreciates the air conditioning and the fact that they are newer dorms. There is a brand new dining hall right beside her dorm and she really likes the convenience of that.

Her classes are mostly on the other side of campus, but she does not seem to mind the walk.
She is hoping to live in Skyline again next year.

Good luck! She has friends all over campus and they all seem to like where they live too, so I don’t think you can go wrong.

How hot is it in September? I like the suite styles in the village, but they don’t have ac.

My S lives in the village. It was his first choice in housing because it is in the middle of everything. He has classes in east campus as well as the bluestone area. He did not complain at all about the heat in September and reported that he used his fans for about 3-4 weeks.

Thanks, fan is fine!

My D was in Potomac freshman year and is in The Village this year. September her freshman year was much hotter than September this past year. She was very thankful for the AC her freshman year. She spends most of her time in the music building - including late nights - and the hike to Potomac got old. She likes her current location - especially how convenient it is to UREC. She loves the new dining hall though so still walks over the bridge for lots of meals.

I will be spending a lot of time at UREC, so village sounds good.

There’s a tunnel under 81 that starts near The Village and goes over to UREC. You’re convenient to UREC in the new dorms too - and the new library and the new dining hall.

So am I correct in assuming that ur major can affect ur housing location?
IM isat/cs sowill I be able to get a dorm near isat? I’m a transfer and I knowfresman get priority when it comes to dorms but will i get priority leftovers by isat?

I don’t think your major has anything to do with where you are housed. I don’t know how it works for transfers, but for those other than freshman, the choice is by lottery. You choose according to an assigned number and you get what you get.

That’s what I thought.
Thanks again Carter!
