Housing

Yeah I’m dual enrolled but I live in Lee county so it’s ESC instead. Why are you concerned about whether or not they’ll transfer?

usfgirl : worst place for hair. haha. that sucks. lucky you, you’ll finish college faster! and yeahh, i am in the honors college… honors LLC is in Juniper-Poplar… thats why i’m tryin to get some info about it. btw, we use celsius. no worries. (:

Blackrose21: i applied to a few univs there and got into pretty much all… awaiting response from MSU. But USF offerred me a pretty appealing scholarship! so thats one of the reasons. Also, i suppose florida’s weather is kinda similar to Singapore’s… so its not gonna be much of a drastic change. and the honors college invite was appealing too. (: are you from florida too? I’m looking to major in Economics.

how about both of you?

Ok well then I can keep you updated on the weather here I’ll just convert it to Celsius. Today is around 18 degrees Celsius both where I’m at and in Tampa. Lately it’s been anywhere between 18 and 27 (that’s like 64ish to 80ish in Fahrenheit). Is there anything you’re nervous about as an international student?

I’m going to major in Psychology. Do you have a career goal in mind?

Blackrose, I’m finishing my 2nd yr this term, but I’m classified a senior because I showed up as a freshman with a lot of DE and AP credits. I’ll have 133 credit hours when I start next fall. I’m taking my time graduating though by working on two different bachelor’s degrees and will probably end up being at USF for a full 4 yrs…unless I run out of money first.

@usfgirl
i have DE credits but sometimes when they transfer to a university then it will just be taken as an elective. or not transfer credit for credit. i know from bcc to ucf it might but i’m not sure with usf

@singapore
when u said msu are u refering to michigan state?

@lizard
oh wow that must help out a lot with brightfutures with all those credits!

I’ve always been told that by law any state university has to accept the credit but i guess you should call to make sure.

yeah. i think i will be fine since it is an instate school. if it was out-of-state then I would be worried. r any of you guys into sports?

does marching band count? haha. I’m not particularly athletic. I do like to watch footballs games though, just not on TV. TV sports are boringgggg.

I’m a student-athlete at USF; there are about 460 student-athletes on NCAA teams at USF. I still throw a baseball like a girl though! There are all sorts of sports related activities available at USF from club and intramural sports to varsity athletics. If anyone has any special interests like triathlons or bowling or bocce or kite flying or any other kind of sport…it is probably on campus. This weekend the football team is having its spring intrasquad game at Raymond James Stadium.

@lizard
did u find it hard to balance a sport and studies? i’m probably more interested in intramural sports though.

^Academics are my priority and the sport I do isn’t so super time demanding that it interferes with my studies. It is a task though for the guys on teams like basketball and baseball that do a lot of traveling. I think it is really important for everyone at school to have outside activities like intramurals, and clubs, and scheduling free time other than just studying. I think it is smart (and healthy) to get in a habit of doing some exercise at school like jogging or going over to the recreation center regularily. When you go to orientation you’ll get the lowdown on some of the activities going on at school like clubs, intramurals, etc. Too, I use a day-timer book religiously to keep track of my daily schedule.

^ what exactly do u do at orientation?

BR, just show up with an open mind; I’m sure you will get a lot out of the orientation program and will enjoy the two days. The whole program is designed to get you off to a fast, successful start at USF.

http://usfweb2.usf.edu/orientation/first-year-students/index.asp

Where are all the Bulls at?..RIGHT HERE!!!..

I recently just made the decision to attend USF over UCF. I would be an upcoming freshman this fall term of 2010. From what I’ve heard and researched, I pretty much think that the best options for a freshman would be Juniper-Poplar, or Beta/Castor Hall. I think both of these dorms are reasonable as far as pricing, and serve primarily freshmans making a transition to college(the college experience, etc). However, the only thing I’m concerned about it’s the bathroom situation. I got to visit the Juniper-Poplar dorm, and I think I might have a problem sharing one bathroom with 4 other people(I’m a guy, but I’m kind of used to taking 2 showers daily). On the other hand, there is the Beta/Castor Hall, which I really don’t how the bathroom situation is?? “The hall is coed by bedroom with separate men’s and women’s bathrooms at the center of each wing” (from USF website).

-Could anybody explain this a little further or in depth/ and maybe shared some pictures if you got to see the Beta/Castor Hall dorms and bathrooms???

Is there really any difference between the Beta and Castor Hall???

BTW: I joined the Class of 2014 South Florida Bulls!

Dperalta,
Welcome! Congrats on becoming a Bull! Hopefully we’ll all get to see each other around. =)

In traditional halls (Beta and Castor) there is one bathroom area for each sex per floor. It’s like a public bathroom. There’s a bunch of stalls and a bunch of showers and stuff in one big bathroom that you share with the whole floor. What it means by coed is that there are both men and women in the building but each room will have either two males or two females, you’ll never be roomed with a student of the opposite sex. The bathrooms are not coed.
As far as differences, all I can find is:
Beta houses 290 students, is 16x11 ft., and I believe is the one they show in housing tours so it’s pretty nice.
Castor houses 360 students, and is 15x12 ft. The area is the same it’s just the shape of the room is SLIGHTLY different, nothing that would make a big difference.

By the way, when is everyone going to orientation? I’m going on the 7th and 8th because I’m going to Germany all summer so that’s the only time that works for me.

usfgirl!, are the bathrooms clean(maybe this is different for girls and guys…lol)?..are they nice??..are they like the bathrooms you would find in a mall, or in a gym? Do you need to slide or swipe a card when you need to enter the bathroom, or anyone can just get in?..

As far as the orientation, I haven’t checked that out yet, I want to get housing and meal plan out of the way first(I haven’t applied to any of these yet). Which dorms did you finally end up applying for?..are you getting the unlimited meal plan?..I think is the better one for the price you would be paying yearly( I cannot get used to only eating like 2 meals a day…lol)

Well maintenance cleans the bathroom everyday so i would assume they’re at least decently clean. I can’t speak from experience because I’m an incoming freshman too, but maybe lizard can help, she’s finishing her second year at USF. The bathroom is just like one you would find in a mall or other public place. I’m not positive but i don’t think you need a card for the bathroom because you need a card to get into the building in the first place. Again lizard could probably give you a better answer on that one.

I wouldn’t wait too much longer to register for orientation because 5 of the dates are already closed completely and it’s filling up fast. I haven’t finished my housing and meal plan applications either, I want to get that done by the end of the month. I’m really indecisive lol.
I’m getting the Any 15 meal plan though because it gives you more dining dollars so you have more variety. I don’t eat much anyway lol. If you’re a big eater though, the unlimited plan might be the best choice for you.

Congrats on getting into USF guys.

I’ve lived in Magnolia for the spring semester so if there are any questions I can answer for you, just ask. I’m not familiar with traditional or suit style apartments so I don’t think I can be of much assistance there, but if you have any questions about apartments or the school overall I should be able to help. The one thing I’ll say immediately is if you can live off campus (and I know many of you can’t), that’s definitely what you should do.

Just curious, why do you say that, Gordon? Did you have a bad experience?

Well, personally I don’t like it too much over here. It isn’t bad but there isn’t much of a sense of community, but I think it’s partially due to me being in the 21+ dorms. There aren’t many amenities over here either, in hindsight I probably should have gone to Holly or Cypress or something.

The main problem with living on campus is how expensive it is. I pay $768 for a room thats about 8x12 and share a bathroom. You can live right across the street and pay $500 (or less) for a better room with a private bathroom. USF isn’t even close to being competitive with their pricing.
