My D is considering GT and we want to know if there is any reasons to prefer one dorm hall over another. Is it better to be on the east or west side of campus? Any help will be appreciated.

West side is newer/nicer. North ave apartments may rival west campus now that they’re putting in a dining hall. There are some real junky dorms at GT, that’s for sure, but it will be reflected in the price.

I wouldn’t say that the freshman dorms on West are necessarily nicer.

In my experience, East and West have three big differences: 1. Accessibility, 2. Atmosphere, 3. Dining Hall

Accessibility - West dorms are closer to the CRC (gym), athletic fields, student center, and the upperclassmen dorms. The East dorms are closer to freshman classes, MARTA, religious organizations, the library, football field, and fraternities/sororities (particularly important if your D plans to rush).

Atmosphere - East campus is heavily dominated by freshman, whereas West campus is heavily dominated by upperclassmen. People tend to be more open and interested in meeting others in common areas / dining halls on east than west (upperclassmen tend to already have their friend group established).

Dining Hall - East has Brittain and West has Woodruff. It’s fairly universally accepted that Woodruff is nicer and has better food that Brittain. West campus also has a market where you can purchase food.

So it sounds like East is a better location for a freshman. Thanks for your input.

if you take computer science and your living on west campus you will have about a 45 minute walk to class, which will get old real fast.

Wow. 45 minutes? I didn’t think the campus was that big.

I like West Campus because it is much quieter than East Campus, which is located alongside I-85. West Campus has more of a suburban feel to it than East Campus, but obviously not everyone will like that. I’m about to graduate in less than four weeks, and while this may sound cheesy as hell, I never realized how beautiful the trees have become on McMillan Street.

I’m a guy, so I don’t know whether this translates to the ladies, but on West Campus, you get to know your hallmates really well. It’s common for people who lived on a West Campus freshman dorm hall group up and live together in apartments for the duration of their time at Georgia Tech. By comparison, I have heard that on East Campus, the building as a whole bonds together really well as opposed to the individual hall. Glenn and Towers, for example, have a longstanding building rivalry.

How slowly do you walk? Fifteen minutes is more than enough to walk from Woodruff to the CoC, and Woodruff is located the deepest within West Campus. Besides, you can always wait for the Red Route outside Fitten and get off at the Ferst and Atlantic Stop. We all complain about the Stinger service, but during the morning and early afternoon, you shouldn’t wait longer than ten minutes for a bus, and it’ll take less than five minutes to get from Fitten to the CoC.

Forty-five minutes is a major exaggeration.

I was about to ask the same thing. I can get from anywhere on campus to anywhere else on foot in 20 minutes (and that’s not really hustling either). 45 minutes round trip I could understand.

I don’t think there’s a definitive answer.

i wasn’t rushing when i went(i was also going to Rocky Mountain pizza kitchen which is at the edge)… but it is 1.3 miles from the class to a west campus dorm(google earth), if you’re going at a good pace you could probably make it in about 25 minutes.
