Housing

What are the pros/cons of North Campus vs. Middle Campus vs. South Campus vs. Granville? How does the social scene vary among the various housing areas? Where (if anywhere) do students seem the happiest?

If you are going to be a freshman the best place to stay is south campus....sure you may be the farthest from campus but you meet so many other freshmen and sophomore friends. there is not a really defined middle campus....sure carmichael and parker can be considered middle campus but it is a very easy walk to class.....even if you live in south campus the buses run every few minutes. Granville is on franklin street but once again you don't get to meet as many people.

The south campus social scene is a little bit wilder....especially after the basketball game...( south campus is closer to the dean dome)....Mostly no matter where you are on campus the main partying spot is Fraternity Court.

people seem happiest just being at carolina....

if you wanna meet lots of freshmen : south campus
if you wanna be close to the athletic fields: middle campus
if you wanna be super close to most classes: north campus

but it is really rare for a freshman to get mid/north campus.

The freshmen that I've talked to who lived in Granville seem to regret their decision. One of the reasons is that if you live in Granville you would have to get Granville's meal plan...which means you won't be eating with everyone else at Lenoir/Ram's Head.

having only lived on south campus, i guess i can't really attest for everywhere else. it is true that our dorms completely lack the aesthetic that is typical of north campus dorms (unless you land one of the newer south campus dorms, ie. hojo north, or e-haus south). however, i ended up in what many consider "the worst dorm on campus"... hinton james... and i love it. i've heard people describe it as sort of like an ugly puppy that you can't help but love. If nothing else, it forces you to bond with other people. And let's be honest, the walk is not that bad, just a little inconvenient. But truly, I would be a lot fatter if i didn't have to make that walk up to north campus for class every day.

granville is verrrry fratty. the main reason i didn't want to live there was because i knew i would feel pressure to join a frat, which i have no real interest in. Also, i don't know what the poster above is talking about, but i have not found the majority of the social scene to be at frat court. it was pretty bustling the first week when everyone was pledging... but after that it seems to have really died down. i have found that i hang out mostly on franklin/rosemary, or just down somewhere on south campus.

overall, i would say that if you are a freshman, especially if you are from out of state, you pretty much have to live on south campus. it is so much easier to meet people. and although hojo seems to be on the bottom of the heirarchy, it's not that bad. although once they finish renovating morrison, that dorm is going to be in verrry high demand, and they are going to do the same thing to hinton james.

Basically saying what everyone else has already said, but I'll try to add more to it.

South Campus-
Definitely definitely definitely get South Campus. I'm biased because I live there. Yes, the dorms are pretty crappy. I'm lucky that I got AC in Hinton James, but as a freshmen it is the best way to meet people, like someone else said especially from out of state it is the place to be. There are so many freshmen here, and on weekends it is definitely where it's at. South Campus is improving with RamsHead Fitness Center and Dining Hall now open. Morrison is being renovated to much nicer dorms. The walk is a bit far, no doubt about it. But the bus system here is incredible, and free!

North/Middle Campus-
No doubt about it, the dorms on north campus are reeeealy nice. The location is even better. So if you've got a group of friends you know you're gonna live with, north campus will be good for you. The downside is it's not as easy to meet freshmen. I know many people living up there that wished they were on South Campus.

Granville-
Basically only do this if you plan on joining a frat/sorority. Granville is very isolated from the rest of campus. They don't eat with everyone else and they don't live with everyone else.
