I keep hearing about investment banking in Houston and Dallas at McCombs and I was wondering if anyone knew anything about it (how big it is, how it compares to NYC, who's hiring). I'm also extremely interested in management consulting and wondered what the job market is like for that in Houston and Dallas.

Houston and Dallas I know have the second and third most fortune 500 HQs after NYC and McCombs is the top regional b-school for sure. I'm really excited to hear about this stuff because I (as well as most McCombs students) would rather not go to NYC after college.

Well I’m guessing in TX it’s mostly energy companies, so the investment banks there would be involved with trading energy, weather derivatives and things like that. I think it’s a good idea to work there because TX is cheaper, the compensation is similar, and i-banking is i-banking, so yeah. The only problem with TX is that it’s a poster child for urban sprawl.

A lot of people at UT and at Forbe’s seem to think like that.

Any insight on management consulting?

The Investment Banks are primarily in Houston, and deal with the energy industry. These positions are not as highly sought after as positions in NYC but it is still investment banking (and obviously a lower cost of living…but it is still Houston).

There are mgt consulting opportunities in both locations but it is bigger in Dallas. I would speculate that is a result of Dallas’s central location, DFW Airport, and the wide range of industries in the DFW metroplex.

That makes sense. Thanks.

I had no idea McCombs undergrad business majors went into ibanking… is this just a rare exception?

About 1 in 6 or 7 BHP majors do ibanking. McCombs might be the best at getting you a Big4 job, but that doesn’t at all mean those are the only good jobs McCombs students get.

I live in Houston. I am a junior pursuing BBA Finance, so I need to start trying to find some internship here, i need to take advantage of my location!
