This is just a speculation, but here are some ways to find out if you got rejected or not earlier than the official notification date. Anyone's welcome to correct my theory.

Log on to CommonApp.org and look under payments. If it still says "submitted" and not "downloaded," there is a higher chance of having already gotten rejected. My guess is that they went ahead and threw away your application and didn't bother to download the payment right away.

Call the admissions office to ask about campus visit dates for accepted students. Give a lame excuse about having to buy an airplane ticket in advance to save money. They'll feel sorry for you and let you know if you got rejected.

Keep bothering the financial office. If you have a missing document, tell them you won't waste money sending it until the notification date, in case you didn't get accepted. They'll feel very frustrated and angry, so they might let you know if you got rejected.

I really want to try one of these. Are there any better legitimate methods than those above, other than waiting patiently?

You are correct that they will feel frustrated and angry, but they are far more likely to decide not to “waste” their time or the university’s money on an applicant that ignores their deadlines and refuses their requests, and change a possible acceptance to a definite rejection.

eh… I think i’ll pass and just wait patiently…aka do not even think about it until the last week of march. there’s nothing you can do about your decision anyways. (of course, not thinking about your decisions is NOT easy…lol)

On some schools’ portals…after you’ve been accepted, but not yet notified, a deposit link will appear…or sometimes an orientation link will appear. For some kids, this has served as an early notification of being accepted.

On the Dartmouth subforum, there’s some theory (that seems to be true) about how, before you get an LL, a link appears on the site to the class of 2014 site, but it doesn’t work. Or something.

Last year, for Cambridge, there was an SAQ theory that could tell you if you were pooled, but I don’t think it worked this year

^ The people who got pooled got their decision posted on the UCAS Website later than those who got offers or were flat rejected. But that obviously would not constitute “finding out early”

tried #2 in 2008; it didn’t work but my daughter ended up being accepted (and we had to pay up for the airplane ticket)…there was actually a thread about this that year…

Just wait. Have some consideration for the folks in the admissions and financial aid offices. They are working very long hours as it is. Don’t add to their burden needlessly.
