How a Loan Works?

Okay, so I'm looking that I may have to get a loan anywehre from 4K-10K next year.
I can get a friend or two to co-sign with me (US Citizen friends) Who have good credit and such. I want the loan to be for one year-only, Preferably I want to pay it after one year.

Question is on the title.
I know how to get mortgage loans, car loans, even large 50K loans.

But not student loans or private loan-types related with education.

I have only used two kinds of loans so far: Federal Perkins Loan and Federal Direct Loan.

For Federal Perkins Loan, I filled out a Master Promissory Note. And there's something else you have to do online too.

For Federal Direct Loan, I went through an online interview/quiz. You have to get 12/15 correct to pass the quiz in order to obtain the loan. You can easily cheat on the quiz by copy/paste the whole text onto a word document. :)

I'm not sure how Stafford loans work. :(

What did the financial aid office at UCI say? :)

^ They want to talk to me in person about possible federal loans through my parents.

Private loans is what I'm more looking into.

You're not eligible for federal loans due to citizenship delays, right? You can google private college loans or talk to a bank. I know that Chase, Citibank, SallieMae, and Discover are often used. I have heard that Discover is a bit less expensive and easy to work with, but they'll all probably cost you more than federal loans. I would not take it out as a one-year loan in case there are further delays in processing your paperwork.
