My D was accepted to Math Department on MCS and wait list on SCS. She doesn't like pure Math and may choose Computational Finance as her major. Any idea about job placement from this major ?

A friend of mine transferred to Comp fi from ECE and said that it wasn’t easy, since Comp fi is very competitive. However, I believe it’s a very popular major amongst business recruiters (after his first year as a Comp fi major, he got an internship with one of the biggest banking firms in NYC)

CompFi is a highly competitive program at CMU. I wouldn’t necessarily go into is assuming it is a sure thing to transfer in. The prerequisites for acceptance into the program are notoriously difficult, and the major is very small. That said, there is also the ability to minor in CompFi.
Job placement is very good for students graduating from the program. Hedge funds, bulge bracket bank trading desks, and prop shops all recruit from the program.

Hope this helps,

Selena731 and CMUTPR3, Thank both of you for the comments. It is really helpful.

Yeah, it’s far from a sure thing to get into the comp fi program. Generally the students that get in are 3.8+GPA students in either CS or the honors track math program (which you also have to apply to, and can easily be turned down for as well).

But if you can make it into the program, the job prospects are unbelievable.

All that said, the job prospects for “just” a math major are still very very good from CMU, and your daughter doesn’t have to do “pure math”, get into academia, go to grad school, become professor, etc. There are plenty who go for applied math and then get high paying jobs right out of college.
