America is a very diverse nation, and although everyone speaks English, not everybody is on the same level of wielding the language. So how about we all start a "Collegeconfidential language project" with short lessons ( approx under 5 min) on youtube to teach people YOUR native language and cultures, even if it is English ( there are non natives too who would love to learn the language) . We might set up teams of 3-5 each, and form a community online to develop this project. I actually had a little experience on this, so if anyone interested, message me.
Thank you

How big do you expect this project to become? Considering it’s educational and all and most Youtube viewers would rather watch a video with mindless entertainment.

How big? As big as it gets
Most people would choose entertainment over educational videos. But if we get big enough, we might start to have some connections which promote our videos to get bigger. And the length of the videos is short ( under 5 min). If people think about it, with less than 5 minutes a day, they might start to master some part of the language, and that motivates a lot of them to learn

What sort of content, specifically? Just like “Introduction to English: Basic COnversation” or something? Or “Average American Christmas Celebration, but with a few traditions that seem to be Scots-Irish or English in origin”

Here is how I envision it:
If we get big enough, there should be a group responsible for basic , a group for intermediate, a group for advanced, and perhaps a group for “Culture”
I assume your “Average American Christmas Celebration, but with a few traditions that seem to be Scots-Irish or English in origin” falls into the “culture” category.

I think we’ve got many great online courses already. Such a project may be time-consuming, and perhaps require lots of professional knowledge on teaching &c.

This is not a bad idea. But I suggest you to have a clear blueprint and plan before you start

^but if you think about it, a lot of people don’t want to sit around taking a faceless, online language course. It would be much more appealing and reach more people through youtube… I think it’s a good idea.

@dawncoming: Not really. In popular languages like Spanish and French, yes. But in other language such as Vietnamese, Tagalog etc. there are not that many you can find.
A project maybe time consuming, but remember the more people do it, the less work you have to do. And if you want to use this at one of your significant EC, then you’re welcome to get involve heavily in it. It is optional, though. Therefore I’m counting on your messages, the sooner, and the more, are the better.
Professional knowledge on teaching? Maybe. Each team has to lay out a lesson plan, and work their way through it. It’s best to look professional since therefore it will attracts viewers. But are there a lot that you need to know? Depend on how heavily you and your team want to involve.

And one more, this youtube project is interesting, and free.

@Izzy Busy Bee: Correct. As a team you decide on how to make the video look interesting. Maybe this week, Adam will appear on the video. Next week Helen will. That will keep the viewers from getting bored. And yes, everyone has to present accordingly to the plan, but each can add his/ her touch to make it more exciting

What would be the easiest way to coordinate it, though? I mean, we’d basically need everyone on hsl to give a language they know and then they’d be put into groups? I suppose if it was really well-organized it could work.

Let’s not and say we did on our college applications! yay!

Yes, true. Coordinating this kind of activity is difficult. But basically if there are 3 people who want to do the same language as you do, then you are good to go and can form a team. You might need their AIM and email just in case. If you can’t muster 3 people and you feel you can do your language alone, then please submit a plan to for a board to review. But yeah I kind of need several people to form such board. And then in your team, you may choose your team captain to be responsible for coordinating between your team and the board. I’m interested in hearing yall’s ideas though.

@Cakalacky: hahaha, you would say you are involved a big online language project when actually you don’t? The admission officers know how to check lol

^Obviously joking. >_<

hahaha me too lol
Mkay either today or tomorrow or Sunday, I will put up a blueprint on the project since we are kind of in the process of moving
if you have any ideas, put them up here, I might incorporate it into the plan too

please also list your name if you are interested in this, so I can estimate the scale of the project

This is probably going to end the same way the “let’s start a blog” thread ended up.

hahaha lol talk all you want. But I just have an idea and ask people to join. If you don’t, it’s fine :). If you do, you’re the most welcome

^^YES.

^This is going to fail, 90% of the people on this site are Asian, and they don’t wanna waste their time with this

^If your cat speaks, I say go for it.

OP: I’d do ASL for you. Although I do speak and hear, so it’s not my native language… >.>
