How accurate are Net Price Calculators?

Obviously I don’t expect an exact answer here. My reason for asking is that we ran one for a school our son is interested in (University of New Mexico) and the cost came up as 0. The breakdown looked different than others we had done; most show the sticker price and subtract any aid given. This one gave tuition as 0, but did list the other costs (room, board, books). It showed a grant for that amount, which it subtracted to make the total cost 0. It’s certainly plausible that S17 would get a good amount of merit aid (3.4 GPA, likely NMSF, and 1460 M+CR SAT), but I wouldn’t expect a full ride. I want to wait until the rush is over before I bug the financial aid office there, but I’m wondering if anyone on CC has an opinion. It certainly seems like he should put UNM on his list.

It looks like when you add up the National and Amigo scholarships they cover the full COA.

Congrats.

Yeah, I saw that. He’s not likely to be a NMF, and it says that’s what makes them eligible. However, the question on the NPC is whether they are NMSF. I guess we’ll find out soon enough.

I went back and put in the same info and got a different result- still good, but not paying for books/transportation. There was an opportunity to chat with a person from the scholarships dept., but that’s blocked from my work (I was doing it during lunch, of course

I finally managed to find someone who could give me answers. It looks like they were assuming he would be a NMF; without that the only automatic thing is getting in state tuition. Worth applying for, but not flying out for a visit this summer. He’s got other options he likes, so no big deal.

?

are you saying that he’ll likely be a NMSF, but not a NMF??? Why is that? Does he have C’s for semester grades?

What is his WEIGHTED GPA?

What state are you in? What was his PSAT?

We’re in MD, his PSAT is 224. Unfortunately, he has a couple of D’s. His weighted GPA is probably pretty good; he’s in a magnet math/science program, and he’s taken several AP classes. The D’s are going to limit his options, which is a hard lesson to learn.
