How accurate are starting salary statistics

I’m choosing between Clemson and Syracuse business. Seems like Syracuse has a larger alumni network and more successful grads, but clemsons seems to have better student life and activities. There about the same price for me - just want to know how accurate the schools post grad stats are. It says Syracuse has a better alumni network and grads make over 12k more then at Clemson

Maybe the Syracuse grads who accept positions in high paying, high cost-of-living New York City affect the results of such salary surveys.

Go to the school at which you feel more comfortable.

Incomes are greatly affected by type of job. So you would need to get a good handle on what is being represented, For example, Clemson is a very good state school. There may be more education majors at Clemson then at Syracuse (I don’t know, just a hypothetical). If that’s the case, the teacher salaries would figure in to the total. If you’re not planning on being an educator, than the teacher salary is irrelevant to you but would be included in the overall Clemson figures.

What do you plan on studying? See if you can get First Destination Report information by major. That’s far more realistic and can still be quite skewed. Also, look at median, not average. A few outliers can greatly affect the averages. You get one professional athlete in there with a 7 figure signing bonus and the averages are way out of skew.

I’m in business for both schools, probably finance. Syracuse’s finance outcomes seemed really strong, and based on the schools presentations, for overall business grads Syracuse grads made about 12k more despite the schools having really similar programs. Not sure weather these numbers are accurate though because a lot of website say different things

Yea i know it’s not a good idea just to look at salary alone. There just really similar overall. Coming from rhode island should I be worried about the ability to find a job in the northeast if I attend Clemson?

Are the pay levels you referring to for the same major at both schools?

yea I was looking at finance for both

How about the same jobs within majors? Clemson may send more kids to B4 accounting and Syracuse might overweight banking. Your typical finance job is going to pay pore than accounting so you need to get at the figures within the actual major, not just generic business.

Another thing to consider is Clemson probably places more kids in the south. That doesn’t mean you can’t get to the northeast if that’s your goal. But, the south typically pays less AND is FAR LESS expensive to live. You’d actually keep more in your pocket making 60k in Charlotte than 90k in NYC. Not just taxes or housing. Overall cost of living. Burger and a beer in NYC costs $30. In Charlotte that would run you less than $20. That adds up quickly!

that’s true - Don’t want to plan so far ahead but i would definitely want to live in the northeast, but I would be fine living just outside of a city, not actually in the city, as it would be cheaper

It will be more difficult to secure a position in New England or in the Northeast if you attend school in South Carolina at Clemson–which is a public school with about two-thirds (67%) state residents & much of the remaining 33% from adjoining Southern states–simply because companies want to recruit efficiently & often balk at paying relocation costs of new, inexperienced hires.

Also, regional cost-of-living differences often account for pay variations.

P.S. Often when one elects to attend school in a different region of the country, that student prefers to stay in that region.

Yea I mean I guess it’s hard to imagine how 4 years living down south will change where I’d want to live, but as of right now after living my whole life in the northeast I would definitely prefer there.

Clemson does have number one career services which could help job placement.

Also unrelated, but is 4 year graduation rate a big deal? Syracuse’s is 71 compared to clemsons 59. But I think that could be because Clemson has more engineering majors whose paths may be more then 4 years.
