How accurate are the net price calculators?

@menloparkmom …put the 1520 in and it came out the same…$19k

@skippy00,
the next thing I would do is contact U of A to see if the Scholarship deadline really IS June 1!! thats only 2 months from now.
If it IS , then make SURE he gets that application in on time!!
I suggest you start a spreadsheet to keep track of all college applications- deadlines, applications requirements, etc etc.
It will help keep you sane.

pm @mom2collegekids
she is the U of A guru, and is also very knowledgeable about FA in general.

I just checked the website and the U of A scholarship deadline is Dec 15.
https://scholarships.ua.edu/freshmen/

"The application is updated each year, so it is very important to wait until the senior year of high school to ensure that the correct application is completed. "

Is your son going to be a National Merit finalist? If so, that opens up a lot of full ride scholarships, like at Central Florida, UT-Dallas.

If that comes from the PSAT then no. He did not prep for that test because we didn’t know anything about the National Merit. Such a bummer…

@menloparkmom I believe the June 1 deadline for Huntsville is for students enrolling fall 2018…so really…it’s a very late deadline…not an early one.

@mom2collegekids can tell us the scholarship potential for this kid at Huntsville.

@Skippy00,
have your son check out this program.
https://bovardscholars.usc.edu/
" The USC Bovard Scholars program helps high-achieving students with financial need gain admission to and succeed at the nation’s top universities."

the kid from Houston who was accepted at 20 colleges participated.
it can’t hurt your DS to have something like this on his applications.

@thumper1
^the website says Dec 15.

Apologies @menloparkmom the websites do have a deadline of December 15 for Huntsville. BUT I’m hoping @mom2collegekids will chime in…because I thought they were still taking applications with scholarships available.

Question again…do you think NPC will be more accurate for college’s that don’t want a CSS profile? Providing they ask financial questions on the NPC? The reason I ask is because we own the building that we conduct business in and our business is a family owned business that employs less than 100 people. With that said we qualify for the “small business exclusion” on the Fafsa.

@calmom …great point but thankfully our business doesn’t fluctuate to that extreme. We are usually within $5,000

Ok…can someone summarize @skippy00 ‘s child’s situation?

Is he a junior or senior? Major? Career goal? Stats? What is the family’s budget?

It isn’t too late to get merit at UAH for a current senior.

These schools usually do not superscore for merit.

For UA, if a senior is a NMF, it’s not too late for merit at UA (Tuscaloosa)

I believe UAH (Huntsville) is June 1 for this fall and UA (Tuscaloosa) is Dec 15. (I am still trying to find a link that indicates that UAH June 1 deadline.) Scores and grades can be updated through Aug 1. It may be that GPA refers to weighted as the table refers to 4.0+

UAH Dec 15 deadline is for competitive scholarships, not automatic.

@mom2collegekids

thanks @thumper1

Ok…so he’’s only a junior…plenty of time. Have him take the ACT as well.

What is his home. State

@mom2collegekids we are in MA…

He is a Massachusetts resident.

Since he’s only a junior, there are no deadlines coming up within a few months. That UAH deadline mentioned is for current high school seniors…not juniors.

@Skippy00 If you’re really interested, there is a board for UAHunstville
http://talk.qa.collegeconfidential.com/university-of-alabama-huntsville/
You may be able to get more information there from parents of current students. It has been awhile since @UAHAdmissions posted, but he/she is an admissions rep who was pretty active and may be able to help with any specific questions you may have. It looks like a great location if your son is interested in aeronautics. Also, note that in addition to the merit tuition scholarships, NMSF gets full tuition and $1,000 stipend, and NMF gets full tuition, $1,000 stipend, on-campus housing allowance and meal allowance.

Something to think about as he studies for the PSAT.
Good luck!
