How active are Tufts students?

I love being outdoors, playing sports, pretty much just being active. I was wondering, how active/athletic is the student body at Tufts?

Also...do people just sit inside when the weather sucks? I'm coming from a warm climate, so I have no clue what people do in weather below about 60*.

I'm from South America, and I had similar worries to yours.

If you are really outdoorsy, the Tufts Mountain Club (TMC - check their website) is probably for you. Constant retreats, hiking, etc. opportunities.

You should also consider doing the Wilderness pre-orientation program, which is a great way to meet other outdoorsy freshmen and the upperclassmen leaders. I didn't do it but my friends who have made their best friends at Tufts (and we're seniors now!) during that pre-orientation week!

Yeah sometimes people sit inside. But I also run every other day of the year, sun, rain, snow, or otherwise! And I always run into people doing the same things. Just buy good gear for different kinds of weather, and your body temperature should stay just about the same all year-round ;-)

Intramural sports are also pretty big so if you're an athlete who won't be playing varsity, it's a good way to stay active in team sports. I played co-ed soccer for the first two years and it was really fun. The gym is also a big hub of activity (particularly before spring break, haha, it's always full of beach-ready bums). The facilities are pretty nice -- indoor track is great, as well as the machine room, and the swimming pool.

Most people here play at least one varsity or intramural sport.

Yea pretty much.. or they make the trek to the gym.

below 60! haha.that is like...every single day, besides in summer.

I second lolabelle!!! I have a Tufts' student and everyone is incredibly active; I don't know how they do it. The mountain club is a favorite---they go to the loj to hike and study and hang out. Some dance- Asian dance, Salsa and other kinds----some sail, crew, play Bball, ski, swim, rock climb, do yoga, lax..........It seems like everything is there. These are the most amazing people..... happy and kind.

Are there parks nearby for running/jogging, or do students mostly run around campus? Also, are most of the students in the mountain club hardcore outdoors-people, or are there beginners as well?

Running around campus is enjoyable and convenient, so yes, many do that. Others use the indoor and outdoor tracks, as well as the treadmills in the gym. There is the Powderhouse Square Park which is literally across the street from campus.

My favorite place to bike/run is the Somerville Community Path which is cyclist/pedestrian only -- here's the website: http://www.pathfriends.org/scp/. It goes straight through 'til the Charles River! It starts right at Davis Sq. which is a 5 minute walk from Tufts.

Also nice, but further away is the Minuteman Bikeway. http://www.minutemanbikeway.org/Pages/intro.html

Here is a website that lists all the bikeways/running places near Tufts. http://www.pathfriends.org/

Thanks again. S. is an almost-obsessive runner....
