How actually is the BU campus?

From what I hear, people say it has a horrible campus and is basically shaped like a long line. I only got to visit Northeastern when I was in Boston, which I very much enjoyed. I wish I could’ve toured BU though.

Go to Bing.com, select Maps and type in Boston University. Select Bird’s Eye View and you will see the campus. The campus extends for 2 miles along Commonwealth Avenue.

I personally love BU’s campus. It’s not like a traditional campus, but it’s still very beautiful and awesome.

I think liking a specific campus is very subjective, everyone has different tastes. Yes, BU is basically a straight line and my daughter thought it was terrific during a tour. She likes the feel of being in the city and doesn’t like a campus feel. Northeastern has much more of a ‘campus’ feel. It’s in the city, but you realize it less.

It just depends on what you like. TomSr has a great suggestion. For all the colleges we could not visit, my daughter pulled up google maps street view and “walked” around the campus!

Can we please stop giving bad advice? :stuck_out_tongue:

What others have said is accurate. BU is very much a city school and is one long street, which is great for some and not for others.

It is okay. I loved Northeastern’s campus but I really didn’t like BU’s because it doesn’t really have a campus feel and is rather in the straight line as mentioned. The buildings are on the opposite side of the street. It is more similar to NYU or GW if you have been to either of those campuses. It is very much “in the city.”

IMO if you liked Northeastern, just apply there. It has all the advantages of being in the middle of Boston with a great campus, alongside the co-op program which is something really unique to the university.

BU has some really pretty buildings and a fantastic river view but I found it to be extremely noisy, traffic wise. The tour guides wear microphones while walking your down Comm Ave and sometimes you still can’t hear them. If you are sound sensitive, it’s something to consider.

@PengsPhils I prefer Bing maps Bird’s Eye View to Google maps!

It really depends on the person. The description is accurate; my S prefers there to be a “college green” which Northeastern now kind of has. BU has a little patch of “BU Beach” but not much. That said, lots of kids apply to both. The reality is they are both excellent schools in arguably one of the best college cities in the U.S.

Thanks for all the comments guys. I actually did get into Northeastern EA and it would be my top choice had they offered me more money. I know BU is known for not being the most generous in financial aid, but I guess I’ll see in March if they accept me. I really do love Boston, though.

@Floridaball A father’s advice. If Northeastern is your top choice I would take this approach: Talk to your folks and come up with a net price that will make it work for your family. (Just make sure it is realistic given the family financial situation.) Then call admissions and flat out tell them that there is a net price that your family can meet and if they can work with you then you will go there. Schools worry about their yield…so knowing it will be a yes helps that number. I cannot guarantee that this will work but it is the approach I would go for. Congrats on the EA acceptance!

I’m not sure if I should’ve done that @SwimmingDad or what I did, which was fill out one of Northeastern’s change in circumstance form. I did include a letter that explains some of my family’s financial situation but I did not include a specific number that we’d be able to afford. I did receive a $27k/year scholarship (one of their biggest I think) so I feel weird asking for money. My family is not really poor, so I doubt they would offer me more money if I asked straight up.

@Floridaball first congrats on the acceptance and the merit. Doing the change in circumstances form is a good idea. See what they say. If and when you are ready to say you will commit, negotiate with them. Decades ago I learned that if you ask politely the worst they will say is no. If it really is your dream school, fight for it! Best of luck.
