How advanced should research be to be a hook?

Hi everyone,
I found many universities accept research paper or abstract for evaluation. But all of them put "advanced" or "significant" or similar adjectives before research. So I am wondering how advanced should research be? I mean, it's certainly not "working at CERN and discovering Higgs Boson with Peter Higgs as mentor". But can anyone give me a straightforward explanation? Or if you did research or heard of research done by high school students, can you tell me what is it?
Thanks in advance

Research is almost never considered a hook, unless you contributed to truly groundbreaking research like the CERN example you proposed, or if you are an Intel/Siemens finalist.

what if that research was published?

A hook is something that gets you pulled out of the regular applicant pile, and into the very small pile that doesn’t go through the regular process. A solid paper in a good journal in a field that you will most likely continue in at college can be a plus for your application.

To be a hook would require Dr. Famous calling the admissions office to say that zyl1024 has to be admitted in time to start work on the next phase of the joint research project at CERN.
