I'm hoping to be admitted to the USNA after I graduate (2011, I'm entering jr. year) and am wondering whether at this point I have a decent chance to get in. Here's what I have done so far:
4.0 GPA
2010 SAT
AP Calculus (AB)
Math up to Calc 2
Completion of my school's volunteering program
JV volleybal, JV softball, V basketball, V cross country, V softball

Also, I will hopefully be joining my local Civil Air Patrol Cadet Corps and will most likely captain two or three of the sports teams in which I'm involved. Additionally, I will be taking AP Chemistry, AP US History, and AP Calculus (BC) before I graduate.

Am I doing OK? (I heard that me being a female increases my chances as well, is that true?)

Also, when should I contact my BGO? The USNA website says prelim. app's aren't available yet for my age group, so should I wait til I get that before contacting him? When should I get my nominations?

You are doing great! No need to contact your BGO until atleast August entering your Senior year. Just stay on course with your schooling, go do awesome in sports and don;t tense up about USNA just yet. When the time comes fill out your prelim and try to attend summer seminar (if you can't, its not a deal breaker) Then you will get you candidate number, with contact info for you BGO then you can even wait a little longer before contacting him/her. Around May of your Junior year, you can find info on nominations on your Congressman's and Senator's websites, or call their offices. Other than that don't fret just yet! ;)

I heard that holding down a job is also important. If I'm not able to do so, can I just rely on academics/volunteering, or is it basically necessary to find responsible employment?

with high level academics, high level of volunteering, and 3 seasons a year of athletics, it would be near impossible to hold down a job too. the academy understands that.

Do not worry about your job. As long as you are well rounded you will be fine. APs are not as important. When I applied the only AP classes I took were history and government. If it is an AP class that you know you are going to stuggle through and get a C then I would rethink taking it. As many people at the academy that took AP classes there are as many that did not and took calc I plebe year. Many who took Calc before retook it plebe year since they did not pass the test needed to validate that was given during plebe summer. Any questions let me know. I had a 4.0 in high school and graduated the academy in the top 40%. At the academy I put a lot more time into leadership and military training/PT than I did with academics.
