Ive heard many graduate from NYU with over 100K in debt.

Well with their expensive tuition and notorious history of stingy aid, thats not too hard to imagine.... I just hope it doesnt happen to me.

My God, that's higher than the average mortgage in Montana. Even NYU isn't worth that. $40,000 would be my absolute max, and that's really pushing it.

Did anyone hear about the kid that lived in an NYU library because he didnt want to pay for a room?

Yep, crazy stuff.

Question: If my parents make a combined income of $70k, will I get any grants from NYU? Not sure if NYU does grants...

jack it depends on how much they want you and your EFC on your FAFSA.

Ah... well the EFC is $15k.

You will get some grants.

NYU is a great school. But it is certainly not "far more" prestigious than McGill. You only think that because you're ignorant.

Haha you call me ignorant then repeat the same thing I said in your next post. Again, empoloyers dont usually check the average SAT score for each school on collegeboard.com; They don't go through the "college search" process like high school seniors do.

BTW, many employers outside of their local area have never even heard of good but small schools like Dartmouth, Rice, Tufts, Wake Forest, Washington in St Louis, Emory, and Vanderbilt. All of which are much more selective than both NYU and McGill. There was a study done on this, google it.

My mom makes around 67,000 a year and my dad died a while ago so she's a single parent. I never checked the EFC thing though, I guess my mom did. How big are NYU grants usually and does anyone think I could get a fairly good one or one at all? I got a Saturday at the Square invite which I guess is rumored to be for "top" applicants but I don't think anyone knows for sure. Hmmm....

its not a rumor, it IS for top applicants. it says so right smack dab in the middle of the card.

okokok when I went on FAFSA.ed.gov, it said that the EFC was a certain number, but when you read the "What does EFC mean?", it says that the given number doesn't actually mean a monetary amount....so how did you guys find your expected contribution?

Hi everyone,
I'm really not new here but this is my first time posting. Anyway, I feel your concern about NYU's tuition. I'm attending graduate school there this fall and all I've been doing lately is searching and applying for scholarships. Fortunately, I am a Veteran so I will be getting some GI Bill money for that (for at least the first year). I pretty much feel that I've been blessed to not have any loans up until this point (my Associate's and Bachelor's are completely paid for b/c of tuition reimbursement through my company and the GI Bill again). I won't be able to get any help from my family either so unless I get a few scholarships, the rest of the money I get will be through loans.

when it says the efc doesnt mean a monetary amount i think they are just trying to tell you it doesnt mean that's what youll be paying every year. they just want you to know thats what colleges will use to estimate your financial need, but is no guarantee.

personally, i hate the efc cuz ours came out to almost $32,000 which is $12,000 more than my parents can afford to pay per year. they promised to pay $20,000/year for my college and even that will be tough on them...and they aren't at ALL considered extravagant spenders. they are very conservative when it comes to money. seriously. i got like...3 books and some free usb connector thing my dad was given at his work for christmas lol. basically, yeah, i hate the efc calculator.

thats the end of my rant. =)

Another question... what is the average EFC of students at NYU? Would it be above or below mine (15k)?

I'm curious, because if I get the average grant ($13k), I'll be able to afford NYU. If not, it will be very difficult.

Oh man - my EFC is only about $4000.

And my parents cannot work (one is disabled), their AGI is $0.

Got into Saturday at the Square...
Do you think I'll get an above-average grant?

Or.... should I start selling my plasma now on a regular basis? (Haha jk)

I think its definately higher than yours - your EFC is on the low side, jack

Cool! Ha, I guess going to school in the inner city leaves me with an ackward sense of finances...
