<p>Hi, I'm a 17 year-old Korean male.
I'll be applying as an international student for class of 2012.
I'm currently attending a public high school in Canada.
Sadly, lol my school does not provide any ap, honors, etc classes.
Also, we do not use gpa but mark grades out of 100.
For my 11th grade (junior year in the states), my average was 91 which according to my friend who went to uci translated to almost 4.0 gpa. Im planning to major in biology or biochemistry. I got 94 in my gr 11 bio and 88 in 11 chem. Also Im expecting 90+s in gr 12 bio and chem.</p>
<p>I only participated in playing basketball since gr9.
so i played 3 years (4 if i play this year) of basketball.
I once was a captain also, in 10th grade.</p>
<p>i have 200hrs of volunteering.(assisting public school basketball team and mission trip to dominican rep.)</p>
<p>my app essays and recs will be pretty good.</p>
<p>I took sat once in may and got 1960.
R. 590 W. 620 M. 750
Im taking another one in october and expecting at least 2100.
i havent taken sat2s so i wont apply for ed/ecs. im taking math2c,bio,and chem in november.</p>
<p>So here are school that im thinking of applying.</p>
<p>1.Northwestern University
2.Haverford College
3.Tufts University
4.University of Notre Dame
5.University of Michigan Ann Arbor
6.University of Virginia
7.University of Rochester
8.University of North Carolina Chapel Hill
9.University of Wisconsin Madison </p>
<p>It would be great if you guys can add some schools that u think will be in good match with my scores.</p>
<p>And ANY suggestions that would increase my chances of getting accepted would be great.
Thanks alot.!!!!</p>
<p>Ah i forgot to mention.!
Classes i have taken and will take are the most demanding courses that my school offers.! although they are not aps or honors.</p>
<p>All I know is that Ann Arbor and UNC Chapel Hill will be very tough for you. They would be reaches for a domestic student with your resume, and being international never helps your chances.</p>
<p>Northwestern and tufts: reject because of your SATs
Notre Dame, Michian, Wiconsin, UVA, UNC: high reaches
URoch: Not sure, id have to say, reach?</p>
<p>91 avg corresponds to a 3.7, which is low for many of the schools you're applying to. Unless you're holding out on a lot of your EC's/awards, what you have isn't going to be enough to account for your GPA and SAT. SAT is low, and 2100 would not significantly help alter your chances. </p>
<p>1.Northwestern University: Big Reach
2.Haverford College: ???
3.Tufts University: Reach
4.University of Notre Dame: Big Reach
5.University of Michigan – Ann Arbor: High Reach
6.University of Virginia: High Reach
7.University of Rochester: ??? Reach/Low Reach
8.University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill: High Reach
9.University of Wisconsin – Madison: Low Reach/Slight Reach</p>
<p>I would suggest just sticking with Canadian colleges.</p>
<p>Apply to some of the 'lower' universities. Look at the 2nd tier. If you aren't satisfied, you can always work your ass off 1st year and transfer...</p>
<p>hmmm then wat would be the 'lower' schools that you might suggest??
that have good science programs....</p>
<p>and i have picked these schools based on the middle 50% sat scores from the collegeboard...and 2100 is in the middle 50 for all of these schools..
then y would these schools be mostly high reaches for me??
is it cuz i have like no awards/ecs?????</p>
<p>Yes, that and your GPA. The applicants to those schools tend to have strong GPAs (as in above 4.0). If you seriously don't have ECs, private colleges put a big emphasis on that, so one EC out of 10 possible slots to put them really doesn't stand out. Even fluff is better than nothing.</p>
<p>I would suggest looking into some LACs, or state schools. OSU/MSU, they seem to be matches. Syracuse (private though isn't it) is a maybe, but I've seen people get in with less.</p>
<p>yo know unc-ch only accepts 25 international students right??(yeah i know,i did not believe this first time).
1.Northwestern University-reach
2.Haverford College-dunno) if you are coming back to korea, dont applay, haverford is not gonna get you anywhere..even if its a great school
3.Tufts University-reach
4.University of Notre Dame-reach
5.University of Michigan – Ann Arbor-reach
6.University of Virginia-reach
7.University of Rochester-same thing with haverford
8.University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill-dont apply
9.University of Wisconsin – Madison -decent chance..</p>
<p>add uiuc(decent chance),uwash-seattle(decent chance), osu(in), and msu(in)</p>
<p>I would like to justify you people's comments about GPAs.
In Canadian marking system, 91% DOES NOT equal to 3.7 or anything like that. I've seen people with 88% average and our counselor CLEARLY told them that it changes into 4.0 as long as they have "straight-A standing" (schools in Canada generally sets their "A" around 86% or so). So in other words, percentage does not matter in terms of calculating GPAs. Of course they are going to look at the percents, but 3.7...is just too cruel for us ;( Canadian schools rarely have grade inflations...
I'd say you need to get your SATs up about 150~170 more points, and more in-depth extracurricular activities. Chance of getting into Northwestern - I'm assuming ED - might drastically increase once you get your scores up.</p>
<p>'mrclassicfreak'. thats wat i thought!!! lol
i thought my 91 average would be higher than a 3.7.......
neways...lol
ive been so depressed for dayz after realizing that my gpa would only be 3.7
wat schools would u pick as matches and safeties for me in the list????
please tell me!!thanks alotttt</p>
<p>^That may be true, but he's still an international with one EC, no awards, and a low SAT score. GPA is one part of the pie, admittedly a big one, but having a 4.1 as opposed to a 3.7 only makes the list go down like this:</p>
<p>1.Northwestern University: Big Reach
2.Haverford College: ???
3.Tufts University: Reach
4.University of Notre Dame: Reach
5.University of Michigan – Ann Arbor: Reach
6.University of Virginia: High Reach/Reach
7.University of Rochester: ??? Low Reach
8.University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill: High Reach
9.University of Wisconsin – Madison: Low Reach</p>
<p>Notice how few things change. You've got a situation where the public schools will first pander to their own state residents, then OOSers, THEN internationals, making your application not really stand out at all when you realize internationals will compete for a very limited number of seats. On the other hand, while private schools are much more receptive to internationals, they emphasize ECs much more, which is something that the OP doesn't have as much of. Consider some private schools in the 30~40 range on the USNWR ranking as your slight reach/high matches (ie. NYU is the most ideal if you get your SAT up), or, if you truly want to go to a US school, something beyond that. I would honestly say that you'd do much better in Canada.</p>
<p>Ideally you would get a 2100, but breaking mid 2000s is good. The thing about NYU not being a good biochem school, the fact is, is that the school you go to for undergraduate education will hardly make a major impact. The rankings are almost always ranked according to graduate programs, so looking at those for a list of schools for college hardly would be good.</p>
<p>i was also kind of interested in applying to boston college, u of i - uc, george washington, boston university.
wat do u think about my chances?</p>
