I'm just curious... does anyone have any experience going to New Haven? By plane, train? What's the fastest way to travel?

is this a joke? planes are certainly the fastest way to travel. if you need directions to new haven, I believe the yale website has that information from major cities. I live in Phoenix so I don't know the closest major airport, but just off the top of my head I would assume JFK and Boston airports are only a couple hours away. From there, I'm sure there are trains and buses (I wish we had trains in Phoenix. Our public transportation is horrible at the moment. Darn bad city planning)

We like Northwest Airlines to Bradley Airport in Hartford,Connecticut. Northwest flies through Minneapolis which seems to run pretty well, even in the winter. I hate O'Hare, but everyone has their preferences.

Then you take the Connecticut Limo from the airport to Phelps Gate on Old Campus. Takes about an hour, door to door. The limo is about $36 one way for Yale students. This fare is also good for prospective students. Google for the phone number, then call them to be sure you get the right fare, and a confirmation number, which you will need to board the limo which is actually a van or bus. Sorry.

You can also use the NY area airports, and trains. Others may be able to give details on that method.

I live in LA and I went to Boston to visit other colleges, then took the amtrak to new haven. The train/subway system in Boston is efficient so you'll have no trouble getting around town

My dad booked US Airways from SF to Philadelphia to New Haven, for Bulldog Days.

Thanks everyone for such great answers... I wanted to see what options were available. After years in San Diego and Los Angeles, I've never had to travel to a small/mid sized city without a car before... :)

If Burbank airport is an option, Jet Blue flies directly to JFK and then the CT Limo takes you to Yale.

Southwest flies to Hartford as well.

The most convenient airports are Bradley (Hartford), White Plains NY, JFK, LaGuardia.

I always fly into Bradley and rent a car -- an option if you're travelling w/your parents.

Newark isn't a bad option if you are traveling light. You can take NJ Transit from the airport to Penn Station for less than $10, then Amtrak to New Haven.

Hi Gryffon,
I'll just throw this out as a mom from the west: If you are traveling alone, and aren't confident about making train connections and feel intimidated by the thought of all that, you might want to stick with landing at Bradley, this first time. (Bulldog Days, I assume?) There will be lots of other prospective Yalies at the airport, and on the limo, so you will have an easy time with this.

My daughter is a freshman, and has now branched out to traveling home through NY combined with visits to all the cool stuff in the city, but has usually done this with savvy friends from the area.

Alright... thank you everyone... :) I appreciate it.

I agree with riverrunner about flying into Bradley for a first-time visit, especially if you're traveling solo. As a mom, I felt more comfortable his freshman year knowing it was just a short limo ride to the airport for S. Now as a junior he uses NY most of the time since flights are much cheaper from there for us. He takes MetroNorth (cheaper than Amtrak) from New Haven.
