I am an incoming freshman this fall. Do people buy textbooks before college starts?
I also have heard that you can buy textbooks in week 1 or 2, is that okay to do?
How would you do homework without textbooks then?
Do professors require you to bring textbooks to class everyday?
Do they even care if I don't have the books? (because there are some professors that don't use textbooks at all even though there is a list of books required)----someone told me this
What are the "recommended" textbooks? Is it okay if I don't buy those? Are they really necessary?
I am thinking about buying used textbooks from Amazon, Half.com, or DealOZ. What other websites would you guys recommend?

sorry I meant “How and when to buy textbooks”
it just keeps bugging me

I like this site.
bigword.com
Another good option is to check the fb pages where students sell textbooks all the time. People would either post that they’re selling textbooks or buying them and plenty of people respond. (Like UCSD Class of 201X)

Some people buy textbooks before college starts, some people buy it after it starts, and some dont even buy them and rely on the library.

You’ll be perfectly fine buying them in week 1 or 2 but you would have to go a certain period without a textbook.

Different classes/professors have different ways of assigning homework. Some are online, some are from the textbook, and some write their own and post them online.

You dont not typically need to bring your textbook to class.

Professors don’t care if you bring your textbook or not to class. You dont even need to go to class. If you fail, its your own fault.

My personal advice is to wait until school starts before you buy your textbook. Its usually not a problem to go the first week or so without your books since most students don’t even have their textbook at that time yet or they’re waitlisted and dont want to pay for a course they wont get in. Usually the library will have your book on reserve so if you’re desperate for a book that you dont have yet, you can check one out there. Now if you want to buy your books early since it tends to be cheaper online and shipping takes forever, I would email your professor about how important the book is and decide then. There were plenty of times when I had a book that said was required on tritonlink but the professor doesnt even use it.

So to sum it all up, it really depends on your professor.

just another site: dealoz.com
it basically gets a bunch of prices and finds coupons and then tells you the best price for each category (rental, used, new, buyback, etc.)

I use Amazon and Half and they both work great for me.

I personally prefer amazon, or uloop, postyourbook and Facebook to buy from other UCSD students (skips shipping!). Def do your research before you buy!

cant i just pick em up from the school bookshop?
