Great post aca - I agree. cowgirl - what area of Calgary do you live in?! It's a great city (though it can be a bit dreary)

Politics 101 (cont'd)... And Stelmach takes the cake (premier-of-Alberta-wise...). Let's just hope there's less pie-in-the face action than with Klein? Nobody thought he would win, but that's what you get with the antideluvian voting system we have.

megtfs - I'm from SW calgary. I love the city. It lacks a bit in arts/culture, but if you know where to look you can find anything. I also went to hs right downtown (Western... on 17th Ave aka "The Red Mile"), so that was awesome because I was in the middle of everything. Right now I'm at UBC Vancouver though... excited to go home for the holidays but having fun here all the same.

As for rankings... throw them out the window and go visit the schools you are applying to if you can. That's what was my deciding factor between UBC and McGill... they're extremely close in rank (they even switch places on the international ones depending on faculty), but UBC has an amazing campus that's a city within a city. I also went to Nova Scotia for a fiddle thing the summer before my senior year and visited Dal and St.FX. If you want a school in the real middle of nowhere... go antigonish? It made me realize I couldn't live in a university town.

Seriously... road trip time!

Oh, and as for the "scary" factor of large, communter schools... definetly a myth if you take the right classes. I suppose if you were taking general arts and in no clubs you might feel that way, but I'm taking a special program (Arts One... it's amazing, look into it if you want to be in arts) and most of my classes are under 25 people. I definetly don't feel like a number... my profs talk to me! I'm even going out for french food in vancouver with my french class and prof during exams. :)

"By the way, Alberta (Calgary south) is also home to our western cowboy PM stephen harper (who of course is trying his best to conceal his western cowboy looks by occasionally wearing glasses so to look like an Eastern scholar...)"

Prime Minister Harper attended two of Toronto's most prestigious and competitive high schools, and graduated with a 95.7% average (tops in his graduating class). He went on to study at the University of Toronto and then the University of Calgary, where he received his BA and MA degrees in economics.

Doesn't quite fit the description of a "cowboy" if you ask me.

Everybody in Calgary is a cowboy, fides et ratio. ;)

For at least two weeks every summer anyways... everybody from the CEO of Encana or the managing parter of a big law firm to your average teenager puts on their boots and hat to go party a la stampede style.

Canadian universities......hmmmm........where to begin?

Being a Canadian university grad I can speak from experience. In the large majority of the universities be prepared for things like: extremely large classes, not beng able to sign up for courses you want or need for your degree, not as much in terms of course choices, very poor funding for needs based students (trust me its a hassle and you end up getting $200 or $300, which they expect will help, and OSAP [if an Ontario student] will make you jump through hoops, fill out a large load of paperwork, delayed funding, and in 50% of times will give only $2000 to $4000 total even though you are a low-income student [which happened to me]).

If you or your family have enough money, then some universities will give preferential treatment such as getting put in classes that are full [where they bump out other students].......and in some cases profs and TA's take extra cash outside of class time for extra help (which I have seen plenty in my years at university).

so these are the negatives in a way; what about the positives of the Canadian university experience (I am sure they must exist!)?

One point about Canada everyone I know who studied there seems to mention is the insanely cold climate.
