alright so ill fill out the common app for most of my schools, but how will they really know everything ive done in my life....i mean sure the essays but there are 2, thats not exactly a lot of opportunity for someone to explain their personality or what not. I wish we could just send in a resume with the darn app. So how do i go about telling the colleges about all the community service i have done in the country of Macedonia (taught english to macedonian and albanian kids, community service at orphanage, zoo, enviromental help...yada yada) ...and then stuff like i helped paint a mural for the zoo in my city here in VA? Also...i am an artist and am going to apply to the liberal arts colleges or art schools within most of the places i am applying...such as Emory University...NYU, UVA, Boston...but most of them do not even want a portfolio...is there anyway to just send an example of my works anyways?

Why aren't you putting all the community service in your app in the first place? I'm sure colleges will look highly upon it. Mention the mural in your app too. If you show a passion for art and it shows in your app, then I'm pretty sure the colleges can get an idea of what you're really into. The people at admissions offices have been going through apps for a very long time, and I'm pretty sure that they're good enough at judging a person by their deeds.

I don't think college admissions are dependent on personality. They're focused more on what you've done and why. Explaining that can give a person a good idea of who you are.

yeah, i guess ill have to figure out how to express everything...fanks

Most schools have supplements too. You can add "Additional Info" on the Common App, so you may as well add some more ECs or a short essay. Also, some schools also have an "Additional Info" place on their supplement, so you can do the same.

Don't forget that you can use the Additional Info section for that stuff, too.

ohhh thats was add info is for alright thanks

A good way to show your personality and things that you didn't have room for on your app is doing interviews with college admissions reps or alumni. Mine have all gone really well and I've been able to give a good impression of who I am that wouldn't really have shown up on an app.

If it's feasible, I recommend interviews. They really give you the chance to expound upon your extracurriculars and other pursuits. Also, you might want to send additional essays pertaining to extracurriculars and additional activities that you didn't have the chance to write about in the CommonApp. These essays don't have to be elaborate. For instance, I also felt that the CommonApp didn't do my volunteer work justice. Consequently, I sent a short paragraph that thoroughly described it. Obviously this isn't necessary, but if you're seriously concerned, it's something that you may want to consider.
