I got assigned a Dickson single even though I asked for a double, so I'm wondering if it's worth it to just stick with it and the extra $800. I'm not particularly social, but I'm not anti-social either, so I dunno how it's gonna work. Anybody have experience with this?

I had a single in Dickson my freshman year. I really liked it. They are pretty spacious and nice. The building isn't super new, and it wasn't as good as where I was this year (Becker on West), but it is pretty nice.

I'd definitely stick with the single. The way I see it, the advantages are many and the drawbacks are few. Basically, you can have your own space if you need it, but you're never alone if you don't want to be. You'll certainly become friends with a bunch of people on your hall, and if you leave your door open it's not like having your own place at all. But, if you need to study, sleep, or get some serious work done, all you have to do is close the door.

In my opinion, a single is much better than a double in just about every way. The only real drawback that I saw was that if you lock yourself out, you can't just have your roomate open up the door! Probably cost me 20 bucks freshman year!

The people who live in Dickson are mostly like you: not particularly outgoing, but not anti-social (actually, Dickson's layout and abundance of singles foster that kind of atmosphere). It's nice and quiet but still mildly social. Gets a little louder on weekend nights but overall, it's nice. I really really enjoyed having a single. You'll be at a disadvantage for maybe the first couple of weeks and then at a huge advantage for the rest of the year. If money isn't a problem, go for it by all means.

Thanks. Anybody else?

I thoroughly enjoyed having a Dickson single. You have your own space but the halls are lively enough and social enough to have a pretty good group of friends.

The Dickson singles are huge, they're almost as big as the Balch singles, and almost as big as a Mews double.

Having a single is great, especially in dickson. Almost everybody else is in a single so there really is no trouble socializing. And it is great to just have your own space. The rooms are generally a pretty good size, but there can be a lot of variation. On the 5th floor (where I was) there are dormers in most rooms that take up some space and kind of limit your furniture arrangement options. the location is great on north campus, one of the closest to central campus and right in between RPCC and appel.

Could vivace or somebody comment on the singles in the 5th floor? I got one and I think its tiny! And made even smaller with the slanted ceilings to boot!

I lived in Dickson 5-6. My room was tiny and the ceiling above my bed was slanted. I still think a single is worth it; privacy is really nice.

some of the singles on the 5th floor are pretty big...it just depends. my room was pretty small but you make it work. there are certain furniture arrangements that make the room seem a whole lot bigger.

From what everyone posted on fb, the 5th singles size range from about 140 to 102. Mines is definitely on the small side. The only picture I've seen is this
http://www.flickr.com/photos/ahuizotl/26731189/ So there are 2 sides with slanted ceiling?

yep...that room is exactly the same size as mine was freshman yr. I was shocked/appauled when I got to Cornell because I hadn't done my research on college confidential/facebook about room sizes. It's not that bad if you're neat.

Haha, okay. At least now I'll have lower expectations. Do we get closets or wardrobes?

Closets. Big, walk-in closets. I was amazed when I saw mine. One of the best parts about Dickson, for sure. Best in the ivy league!

hmm with a little room like that will there be any space for a mini fridge? bc i just bought one today!!

yea, you can put it under your bed if it's small enough...

I used mine as a TV stand.
