The Engineering school seems to be the top school on campus... I don't want to seem pretentious or anything, but I feel like the engineering kids would be more "academically motivated" in comparison to other kids on campus.

Is this true? and if so, are the Engineers regarded differently from the other kids on campus? Am I gonna be a neeeeerdd??

engineering students (esp. physics, ece, and cs students) on average are nerdier than the rest of the student body.

this doesn’t mean that you have to be a nerd or that people will shun you when they find out that you study engineering. this isn’t high school. (although in my experience, no one acted like that in high school either . . .)

Look Kung, given your two posts, you need to decide whether you want to go to the University of Illinois or not. Asking loaded questions on CC isn’t going to get you any closer to an answer to that question. The facts are that UIUC is one of the top engineering programs in the country, as are its college of business, and math, physics, and chemistry programs. Visit the school and talk to students, staff and professors. Get a feel for the university. Engineering students at UIUC aren’t seen as any nerdier, err more nerdy, than any other institution views their engineering students given the educational diversity present. And honestly, grow up and realize that it really doesn’t matter how others see you, it’s how you see yourself that really matters.

dude balth calm down man. he’s just askin a question, just answer it in a more humane manner dawg. chilllll outtt. some of us actually wanna enjoy life and college and just want to know how we’re going to be seen as. so take a chill pill broo

Heh, I didn’t see anything inhumane about my response. I was trying to bring a little bit of reality into his world view by basically stating facts and telling him that he’s got to keep his own counsel with regards to college. And one of the best ways to enjoy college is to be secure in your view of yourself, and not worry about how you might appear to others. I can assure you that there are many gurls out there that don’t mind that you’re an engineer.

yea their posts aren’t offensive at all lol…
and like they said, if your asking if you will be viewed as a nerd, then well, you probably will be. Its who you are, going in engineering won’t change it a lot except for the fact that you have less free time. And like Balthezar said, why wouldn’t girls like smart guys? It’s the other things that matter.

If anything, i’d be proud to be an engineer hence your probably smarter than most of the campus.

In 4 years of engineering at Illinois, I never once ran into an instance of people looking down at me or treating me differently just because I was an engineer. Chances are that if you are out at a bar, just by virtue of being out at the bar you have proven you are different than the stereotypical engineer. People aren’t going to base their judgement of you on your major. They will base it on how you act and interact with them.
