Would this app be good enough?

Thanks for your time.

Academically, you're pretty well qualified. Your EC's are a little weak. You don't seem to have a hook, so there's no guarantee. But nonetheless, you have a decent shot.

thanks for the advice. do you have any reccomendations or advice for finding the hook or ECs that would help me stand out?

Sorry, but Asian males living in CA have it the worst in getting into Stanford. I too am an Asian male living in CA.

I think you have an excellent chance except, as aha123 mentioned above, you are an Asian Male which is a very, very competitive applicant pool.

Also, you don't seem to have anything that is truly oustanding on your application which is a prerequisite for a university like Stanford.

I'm a current Stanford student (yes, asian males from cali do get in)...

unfortunately, I would have to agree that your application looks fine, but there really is nothing that will catch the adcom's eye and have him/her say, "we've got to catch this kid"

As for your stats, take the SAT II- Math IIC, shoot for >750 on that. If you get that, I see no reason for you to retake the SAT I's, unless you're a sure-fire 2400. Again, why literature? Unless you'll get >750, no reason to take it. SAT's are freaking long tests, and it seems like you have better things to do on your Saturdays, besides take standardized tests. As I've said before in previous posts, once you're beyond a certain point for elite schools (>1450 on old SAT, so I guess, 2200 or so on the new one), 3.8 or so unweighted GPA, your stats are competitive...now you're going to have to rely on something else to get you in.

This prayer minister at faith-based clinic sounds like an interesting touch to your app. but from what i've seen from my own observations of elite school's admissions processes, you need something that not only makes you unique and could contribute to the community at the school, but also something (and it could be the same thing) that would prospectively make you be able to contribute to the university's reputation (i.e. science research, renowned artist/musician, or have a position or propensity to be at the forefront of any field).

With that said, looks like you're a good w/ the journalism field. Try to write something or get a photo you take into a major national newspaper (NY times, Washington Post, LA times, USA Today, etc.) If you're concertmaster of your local orchestra, perhaps audition for a national youth orchestra.

I'm just throwing some random ideas out there with the intent for you to get an idea of what schools like Stanford look for, and find what it is that you can do and go for it with all you've got.

Good luck.

Hey dr_slc, can you evaluate my chances too? I like your above post!
