I am a Junior at a tough boarding prep school. I want to know if I have a good chance of getting into some schools I'm looking at.

My resume is as follows:

Taking 1 AP right now(haven't taken exams for it yet).

AP Environmental Science
History Electives

Next Year courses (already confirmed):
AP Economics
AP Statistics
AP Chemistry

Precalculus Honors

Extracurriculars:
Varsity Ice Hockey-4 years(will be)- 2 hours a day on the ice, M-F. No Competition in Pennsylvania- forcing long road trips on the weekend to New England, Canada and Northern New York, frequently misses school due to hockey trips.

International Club- 3 years(executive member)
Resident Assistant in the Dorms
Orientation Committee
JV Tennis
80+ hours of community service
Going to Global Youth Leader's Conference in Vienna, Prague and Budapest over the summer...(got financial aid- only paying $500!).

I have been playing Ice Hockey for 10 years. Selected to USA Hockey Top-100 1992 Birth Year Festival Development camp. Playing in the most elite prep hockey league in the country. Invited to U-18 Japanese National Ice Hockey Team tryouts. Heavily recruited by many DIII-few DI colleges...(however...not interested at all).

Bilingual- Speak Japanese and English fluently. Japanese Citizenship.

I'm looking at UCLA, UC Irvine, BU(Back up), NYU, U of Washington, UC Berkeley.

I am not a resident of California either, so how badly would that affect my chances of any UC schools?

I still have the rest of Junior year and Senior year. How do my chances look as of now?

Ah, also I forgot to include, I want to major in Business/International Business. Thats mostly the reason I will take AP Econ and AP Stat my senior year.

Thanks.

i think most of those are reaches except BU and university of washington. CHance me back!

<a href="http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/643000-chances-upenn-mit.html%5B/url%5D">http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/643000-chances-upenn-mit.html</a></p>

You're definitely on the right track! Keep working hard because this semester is your last shot to make a mark on your UC GPA. Your hockey looks pretty cool and course selection is solid. Good luck (from one nihonjin to another!)

Haha thanks. I should finish with around a 3.8 ish by the end of my winter trimester.

Bumppp!

Get more communty service and EC's, improve ur GPA and SAT's. Do that, and ur a good shot.

Chance me?
<a href="http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/642960-upenn-jhu-gwu-etc.html%5B/url%5D">http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/642960-upenn-jhu-gwu-etc.html</a></p>

with BU, Washington, and maybe NYU, i'd say you have a very very good shot. Your SATIIs are really impressive, although you'll need to get your regular SATs up majorly for the UCs... especially because they dont accept many out of state kids. chance me?

<a href="http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/643028-my-chances.html%5B/url%5D">http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/643028-my-chances.html</a></p>

I'm curious, why the focus on UCs since you're out of state and they won't be a bargain for you?

Location, diversity, and I have family there. I want to apply to a wide range of schools, west and east coast. The west schools that interest me are the UCs, and Washington. Also, the study abroad programs of UC are far better than any of the other colleges I listed.

Also, I think I should be able to bump my SAT up to 2150 at the very least.

UCLA: reach
UCI: high match
UC Berkeley: reach
University of Washington: in
NYU CAS: match
NYU Stern: low reach
BU: low match

This is presuming that you get around a 2100+ SAT. Out of State for UCs is much harder to get into than in-state, so you have a decreased chance there, sorry :(

How much would my extracurriculars (ex. hockey) factor into this?

BUMP! I’m going on a west coast trip tomorrow to go look at colleges!
Any west coast colleges that can be recommended to go visit will be nice!

If you can bump up the SAT…

UCLA: high reach
UCI: high match
UC Berkeley: high reach
University of Washington: match
NYU CAS: match
NYU Stern: mid reach
BU: in

OOS at the UCs is very difficult, unfortunately :(.

Chance me back? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/657806-chance-me-i-have-cookies-ill-chance-back.html</a></p>

This is all assuming that you WILL bump up your SAT score because it looks kinda blah for the higher-tiered schools. Also, OOS UC admissions are difficult, and you would pretty much get zero financial aid there, so you have to consider that as well.

UCLA- Reach
UCI- Low reach
UCB- High reach
UW- Low match
NYU CAS- Match
NYU Stern- Reach
BU- Low match

Thanks for chancing me.

Honestly, I’d never pay the $43K OOS tuition for any of my kids with a few exceptions–Berkeley Haas, Film at UCLA, BME at UCSD and maybe a few other programs. These are schools in a financial crisis where the highest 4 year graduation rate is in the 50’s. For about the same money you can go to a private college. And remember, you will not get aid beyond the Federal (if you qualify) at a UC.

For your interests I would look at Claremont McKenna and USC.

Hockey won’t help you except as a nice EC if you’re not recruited.

If you care about aid (you mention getting it for a summer program) your list is not good.

Thanks alot hmom, Ill def. keep that in mind. I’m leaving for cali tomorrow, and I’m definitely going to go visit USC. I’m not really familiar with the OOS tuition program for UCs, but for U of Washington, you pay full OOS tuition for the first year and then pay In state tuition for the next 3 years. I just assumed it was the same. I was thinking about Berkeley Haas, but I guess, it may seem out of reach. Can’t hurt to visit and try at least :/.
I know there are a lot of really good universities out there, but I’m unsure of whether I would want to work in Japan or America yet, and if I were to work in Japan, a big name US college would give me a huge advantage over other applicants applying for a job. (FFS, some employers in Japan don’t know the difference between BC and BU).
Anyways, I added Pepperdine and USC to my list.

More chances please :).
Thanks, I will chance back.

It’s not the same for the UC’s. You’d be paying out of state tuition for all four years.

Study hard and take your SAT only one more time.

If you could definitely move up that SAT that would be great. Your rigorous business/English course or next year will definitely work in your favor as well as your ECs and the bilingual Japanese factor. Good Luck :)

UCLA: reach
UCI: high match
UC Berkeley: reach
University of Washington: match
NYU CAS: ?
NYU Stern: ?
BU: Definite match
