how are my chances looking?

I'm from a midwest high school, I've got a 2.9 gpa, I've played baseball for 3 years for my high school, I was involved in the Debate team and Speech team, I scored a 26 on my ACT's. I also held a summer job at one of the most recognized golf courses in the midwest (if that has any revalance). Uhh, besides that I have a few good reccomendation letters, I know a few former alumni and I volunteered at a hospital in my area. What do you guys think my chances are of getting in to Indiana?

Apply early is my best advice. GPA is low for IU. ACT is probably fine. Until the statistical details of 2008 freshman are released, it's really too soon for chances.

IU doesn't look at recommendations or alumni you know (unless they are your parents and/or contribute lots of money to the IU foundation or the University.)

I still have one more semester in my Junior year so hopefully I can get my gpa up above 3.0, and I'm taking the ACT again also. what are other key things that IU looks for?

According to the Common Data Set GPA (probably needs to be above 3.0 or higher for OOS) Class Rank (If I recall correctly they look for top 25% for OOS), and SAT/ACT scores are the three key items mentioned. EC's, Legacy, work, recommendations (I don't really recall if they accept recommendations. I know they are not required.)etc. are less important factors.

Here is the problem - a record number of applicants for the past 2 yrs. Schools that previously admitted 60-70% of students now are admitting 40%. Everything has gotten more competitive from the top down. Just give the GPA and ECs your all - retake the ACT if you think you can get it higher - plus the higher the ACT the more $$$ they give you.

thanks for the advice! I'm been working to get my act up to atleast a 29-30 range. hopefully it will work out.
