Hey, so before I start, I am a white male, going into senior year of high school. UC is my dream school and I'm wondering if you think my stats are enough to get me in:

I have an unweighted 3.5 GPA and 4.4 weighted (in 7-8 grade I took high school classes that I got Bs and Cs in; they unfortunately counted towards my high school GPA).

I'm ranked ~200 in a class of 1200 (top 20%)

ACT: 31, didn't take SAT

Freshman year I took all Honors classes except gym and band
Sophomore year I took all Honors and one AP except gym and band
Junior year I took 2 AP and rest Honors
Next year I'll be taking 4 AP classes and rest Honors

AP:
Psychology
English Language
Computer Science
Chemistry (double period)
Music Theory
Calculus AB

Volunteer/EC:

-I have over 700 service hours from volunteering at a park for three years(I currently work there).
- Every year, my family and I volunteer at a food pantry giving out essential items as a Christmas giveaway event.
- I am very involved in the band program in my school. My GPA is a bit low because of the fact that band classes are unfortunately regular-level classes. I am in the two top-tier ensembles at my school, and I am the section leader (1st chair) of both ensembles. It's something that I am passionate in, and it takes up most of my time, so it's really all I've been involved in in school.

That's pretty much my school life summed up; how are my chances?

Colleges will not look at what you did in 7th nd 8th grade. Your GPA will be calculated only with what you did from 9th grade onward (and some schools eve de-emphasize 9th grade grades).

Having said that, your ACT scores and your school rank are VERY low for the University of Chicago. Believe what you may about many of the rankings out there, people now view Chicago as a top 5 school. And it takes far more than top 20% or a 31 ACT score to get in the school.

I’d estimate that you have 1 chance in 10,000 to get in.

Your weighted GPA is good though. ECs…not really. Everyone can volunteer. Take the ACT again. I’ll be applying EA also with a GPA of 3.5 unweighted, but I have really really good ECs that no one else really has (that I know of) and my dean said I have a really good chance of getting in. Try doing ACT again

Most of the admitted students is in top 10% of their class, your HS counselor have to check Naviance for you to see if your score is competitive for U Chicago.

If theres still time, take the ACT again, or try the SAT. I did much better on the SAT (31 first ACT vs 2200 and NM first time SAT) Also, make sure you really enjoy writing your uchi essay and have fun with it. thats a big thing there. There’s supposedly a greater chance of getting in EA, but with your GPA, i’d consider waiting til RD, and working your butt off to get straight A’s first semester senior year to show an upward trend. Other than that, just emphasize your passions and hope for the best.

I’m an incoming first year at Uchicago by the way. Applied RD
