Hi I am going to be a junior this upcoming school year and I am worried I don’t have enough E.C’s to get into some schools I am looking at (I.e Georgetown). My e.c’s are as listed (some have explanations
-Spanish Club
-Knights of Augustine (Augustinian high school) K of A basically helps the religious aspect of my high school and volunteers around my school
-Big Brothers- Helps freshman get acclimated to high school
-The Natir- a satirical newspaper for my school
-Seinfeld Club- Exactly how it sounds
-Altar Server
-Golf Team (3 years gonna be 4)
-Lacrosse Team
I am also a golf caddy (do not know if this counts as an E.C) and have been since 7th grade. I am 19 out of about 250 caddies and am going for the Evans Scholarship (besides the point).
Your EC’s are good, especially the ones where you’ve been involved in for many years. If I were to recommend something it would be to have an EC that may somewhat relate to your major/future plans. For example if you plan on going the pre-med route volunteering at a local hospital would show that you are serious and you’ve thought out the major.
I forgot I plan to do this it is The ABC Program (Advice Beyond the Classroom) one of our alumni teaches an optional class in which he teaches you how to be successful in the business world and if you do good enough you can get an internship at UBS. It specifically pertains to my interested major and looks really good if I can get the internship
Try to develop leadership positions.
Georgetown lists ECs as “important” on their common data set. So while not as critical as at other schools that say “very important” its still worth trying to improve them a bit. The key isn’t to sign up for more things, its to show achievement or leadership in something. Right now you just have a bunch of “member of this and that” and it doesn’t really stand out in an applicant pool. Take one of the activities you like and take it farther. For example in that Big Brothers thing why don’t you be the guy that organizes 2 or 3 BBQs the 1st semester, arranges for food, finds some speakers, etc? I’m just throwing that out, maybe it isn’t realistic, but the point is to do something that shows initiative.
